found out you dont get that amount unlike in Canada. In the US, it's only the est $900 Million if you take the amount over 30 years. otherwise the lump sum is around 60% of the $900 mill. which would be like ~$560, of which taxes get taken off. which is another 40% off.

so you are left with around $340Million USD. still a shit load of money.

The ticket costs $2 and it's a 1 in 292 million probability. its still not a fair bet.

FerrariEnzo 01-09-2016 11:29 AM

Yesterday it was est at $800m with $495 Cash value, meaning thats the take home after the taxing.. then using that to convert into CAD comes to around $700m..
dont forget that Canadian Government wants 30% piece of that pie.. so roughly around $480m?

Tonight, its gona hit 1Billion, im pretty darn sure...

at then end, you still get more then winning MAX...

Came back this morning.. too 30mins to get thru PT Roberts crossing.. got $40 fuel and $30 Powerball tix

it's going to get taxed in the US, but is the canadian gov still going to tax it again? I thought lottery winnings in Canada are not taxable.

or is it that only canadian lottery winnings are not taxable?

ImportPsycho 01-09-2016 01:10 PM

I was in vegas for CES this week
I wanted to pick one up but apparently, you cannot buy/sell lottery ticket any where near vegas.... Biggest gambling city in the world, you cannot play lottery lol

Canadian lottery is for sure tax free.
Even US lottery, I dont think it's taxable income in Canada.

Win big? Not so fast, says the taxman - The Globe and Mail

ancient_510 01-09-2016 01:34 PM

What would I buy?
One vancouver tear down special. That'll take up most of the winnings.

punkwax 01-09-2016 01:56 PM

Got my ticket.

Pretty sure you still get taxed as a Canadian but you can file to get some of it back. Still don't think you keep 100% though.

Nlkko 01-09-2016 02:08 PM

Lotterry winning is not taxable in Canada. You get taxed 30% to the US gov thats it.

Hehe 01-09-2016 02:22 PM

Given the amount of jackpot, who fucking cares how much taxes I will have to pay?

:fuckthatshit:

StylinRed 01-09-2016 02:23 PM

thought they raised the non-resident lottery tax to 40% (federal) not including state taxes?

edit:

Quote:

Depending on your other income and the amount of your winnings, your federal tax rate may be as high as 39.6%. Your lottery winnings may also be subject to state income tax. Thus, depending on where you live, your total tax bill could exceed 50%. You don't get any capital gains rate break for lottery winnings.
no state taxes in Washington though :crazy2: not sure how accurate that is

noclue 01-09-2016 03:47 PM

I can't believe some people deliberately go down to the states to buy powerball tickets under the disguise of buying gas.

The odds are worse than lottomax!

StylinRed 01-09-2016 04:26 PM

I was speaking to my friend just now about it, he's wrapping up an open house in white rock, and got him to go down to buy tickets for us :)

he was sold on the idea of tickets, but the gas was the cherry on the top for him

Hehe 01-09-2016 10:17 PM

Still no winner for today's draw.

The next jackpot is estimated at 1.3billion... fuck... you win it (assuming only one winner), instant billionaire.

That's it, I'm buying tomorrow.

shenmecar 01-09-2016 10:36 PM

Where is the closest vendor over the border to buy Powerball ticket?

Point Roberts, International Marketplace.. Went this morning around 8:30am, 30min wait at the boarder.. then lineup to buy tickets.. another 15mins.. lol... never seen PtRoberts so busy...

So what is the percentage of tax? Doesnt CDN government tax this as income..
The jackpot is estimated at 1.3billion with 806million as cash value.. is the cash value after the US taxes?

dachinesedude 01-09-2016 11:02 PM

too much heat if a canadian won

better disappear for at least a few years

mk1freak 01-09-2016 11:08 PM

You can buy them online, from the specific state's lottery site.... Mind you if you did win you'd have to go to that same state to claim.

MG1 01-09-2016 11:12 PM

I'm glad nobody won yet........ was planning to go south of border on Sunday.

If I win, I'll buy RS regulars something nice. A few will get lumps of coal, lol.
