Aberdeen Square

ok WTF is that place :suspicious:

it said "NOW OPEN" but that place was like 90% empty and food court was 100% empty.

SpeedStars 02-15-2015 07:05 PM

Aberdeen center expansion. Its a lot more like the HK mini malls, they just opened up like half a year ago and most suites are empty.

MeowMeow 02-15-2015 07:13 PM

It was "open" since November 2013 (i used to work there)
security there told me rent or property was really expensive. I'm not surprised it's been over a year since I left that place and it's still empty.

jack3d 02-15-2015 07:28 PM

what?

pingu81 02-15-2015 07:43 PM

The design is poor for the linkage from Aberdeen Center. They need something like what was done with Metrotown -> Eaton Center a while back (which is now just "Metropolis at Metrotown". That is, an obvious pedestrian passageway between both sides. At first, there was a skywalk, but now it's full on shops on 2 levels linking the 2. I discovered this place by accident by seeing the sign that leads you down a small hallway to the other side. Aberdeen Square is definitely struggling. There's a lot of weird shops in there.

fliptuner 02-15-2015 07:43 PM

Wait. Timpo was in Richmond?

Tim Budong 02-15-2015 09:06 PM

Only store i know in aberdeen square is the sneaker store

I agree, the entrance to the pedestrian passageway in Aberdeen Center is too hidden. Though I'm sure they're hoping that the flow of pedestrian traffic from the skytrain will help with business. I walked through there and couldn't help thinking how in the world those shops are even breaking even?

TIL there is an Aberdeen Square.

Still not sure what it is or where it is despite it being next to Aberdeen.

pinn3r 02-15-2015 10:42 PM

nice & quiet

it's good if you need a place to take a dump

Special K 02-15-2015 11:04 PM

The walkway is long. No parking. Outside is also too long.

It took me 15 mins to find my way there the first time. I had to ask security.

Ludepower 02-16-2015 12:42 AM

Dunno how these Chinese malls make money...barely any foot traffic.
Are these shops money laundering or do they help beef up shop owners immigration applications...

68style 02-16-2015 05:37 AM

If you read Aberdeen's website you will discover that the owner of the mall also owns 90% of the stores in the mall too... He brought all those franchises here like Beard Papa etc. No independent retailers can afford the rents there.

AzNightmare 02-16-2015 07:53 AM

:fulloffuck:

Never heard of this place...

ilvtofu 02-16-2015 07:53 AM

I went there back in August and the food court had some people playing cards, some people studying (nice and quiet), and some people were actually just chilling there drinking cans of beer lol.

ZN6 02-16-2015 08:13 AM

There was one booth being set up at the food court. Not sure what type of food it was but the place is barren.

The washrooms were nice. Nothing like hearing the tranquil plop plop sounds echoing in an empty room in an empty mall. Mu.

It's not hidden from sight if you actually walk on number 3, it's because most people try to park their car in the god-awful parking lot and go into regular Aberdeen so no one knows about it who only drive into the mall parkade. Last I checked it wasn't connected and you have to walk out to get into Aberdeen Square. I actually just stumbled in when I randomly went outside to walk around.

Habboy 02-16-2015 08:50 AM

Went there a few years back to get a console modded.....the place seemed shady and had a wierd layout

What a lot of people don't know is that many of the shops (some of which are the 'weird' ones) in Aberdeen are owned by the owner of Aberdeen.Back when I worked there, at least 12 shops were opened by him so that the mall wouldn't be empty. Even without having to "pay rent", several of these stores were in the red. There are very few profitable shops outside of the food court because rent is absurdly high.

cctw 02-16-2015 10:20 AM

actually...if you park in the parking lot but turn the other way on third and fourth floor..there are doors directly leading to aberdeen square...you don't need to walk through the connecting hallway from aberdeen mall...

Also..Shiny Tea rocks! That is all..

pastarocket 02-16-2015 10:48 AM

This Aberdeen Square sounds like the "International Village" of Richmond.
-boring, quiet mall.

Put some firecrackers and lion dancing there for Chinese New Year celebrations. That should bring some life to the place. :troll:

Where's the connecting hallway from Aberdeen mall? Don't think I ever saw it because it's so hidden. :suspicious:

If you enter from the parkade on the second floor, head left past the bathrooms and the jewelry store. It looks like a service exit but you'll see the sign. It's a weird connection with some structures and some "info".

ZN6 02-16-2015 12:59 PM

LOL, this place is so hidden but yet so accessible. It's like everyone knows the Konami code, but where do you enter it to get 99 lives?

AzNightmare 02-16-2015 07:46 PM

This is like Captain Happy Bubble, except the info in this thread kind of spoiled any potential of that...
