How to rev match?

[23-02, 10:35] ICE BOY double clutching is better for the syncros

Chat was useless in this subject, so here we go.

I'm more curious on the proper technique(s) and limiting synchro wear.

In the past and up to recently, I've done:

-Clutch in
-Downshift
-Rev up
-Clutch out

Lately, I've been doing:

-Clutch in
-Rev up
-Downshift
-Clutch out

In theory to limit syncro wear.

Does it matter? Am I going in the wrong direction? Thoughts?

Flick the paddle, duh.

Spoiler!

Limitless 02-23-2015 09:53 AM

I find it goes into gear easier if I match the RPM to the gears before shifting, and I would think that this makes more sense. Correct me if I'm wrong though..

Double clutching: clutch in -> neutral -> clutch out -> rev -> clutch in -> gear -> clutch out?

nsx042003 02-23-2015 10:01 AM

revmatching alone doesn't save your syncros. double clutching with revmatching does.

Clutch in
shift to neutral
clutch out
rev
clutch in
shift to gear
clutch out

i dunno...i don't do it to my cars as it's too annoying and painfully slow. It's like my left leg will constantly be clutching in and out. fuck that. it's not like you are shifting at redline all the time, i don't see this as much of a need.

You have to blip the throttle while the transmission is in neutral AND with the clutch out. Think about it, if you're revving the engine while you clutch in, you're not even spinning the input shaft

Smoothie's just granny shifting, not double clutching like he should...

Shame on you. Vin Diesel would be extremely upset...

Spoiler!

You do realize in that context what he said was ridiculous, right?

white rocket 02-23-2015 10:20 AM

I thought double clutching was for older vehicles without syncros no? Like old army truck and whatnot. Double clutching was needed to prevent grinding.

For me, as soon as I depress the clutch pedal I blip the throttle while changing gears then release. Seems to be working for me. I can't heel-toe for shit though. haha.

Yes I am well aware.

Which is why it also makes no sense in this context...

Great68 02-23-2015 10:25 AM

Decrease synchro wear, increase clutch plate, clutch cylinders, & throwout bearing wear.

Not worth the effort.

underscore 02-23-2015 11:45 AM

Double clutching is stupid and as others have said it wears out a bunch of stuff for no reason. Rev matching doesn't matter when you do it as you're clutch is disengaged anyways.

The_AK 02-23-2015 11:46 AM

Don't use clutch.

Coming from my experience of actually driving machines without syncros. The above two posts describe how to double clutch and rev match properly. Just remember that like what other people say, it wears out other stuff as well.

Me personally I double clutch when downshifting an just "regular" shift when up shifting. Force of habit from work as I usually shift differently depending on what i'm trying to accomplish.

Agreed.

On my work trucks, I only use the clutch from complete stops. Shifting at 2-2.5k lol.

Semi related to this thread, what do I do when I'm at a stop? Do I keep it in 1st or put it in neutral?

underscore 02-23-2015 02:24 PM

For shot stops leave it in first, longer stops pop it in neutral but pay attention and get in gear before you need to move.

you! 02-23-2015 02:25 PM

sorry for the ignorance, but what is a clutch?

Put it in neutral and release the clutch. Helps save your clutch spring.

A term that has become horribly overused by sports reporters.
