Need help fixing rust

Ok, so basically there isn't any rear quarter panel left on this car. Pretty much it's a close tie to getting an entirely new panel or to bondo the fuck out of it. If anyone has any knowledge about fixing rust or some places where I could get a pair of rear quarter panels it would be great to know.

ts14 03-11-2015 09:02 AM

Need more info on this

Yea, make, model, etc ...

Also needs pics

Everything is fixable depending on budget. Bondo will work but won't last. Replacing a panel is the best but most expensive option

SuperChomely 03-11-2015 09:07 AM

It's an 1987 Mr2 but the panels are pretty messed up. I'm not at a high enough post strength to post pictures so my buddy will for me. The rest of the car is solid, the interior is mint, and the engine runs perfectly. So I want to make the rest of the car at the same level of quality.

Here's the pictures of our MR2

SuperChomely 03-11-2015 09:12 AM

Ya, as you can see by the pictures the rust on the right side of the vehicle is pretty extensive but it is limited to the one panel and doesn't extend to the other panels. The left side is a little better off partly because it has that little piece of plastic covering it up.

sell the car lol

bondo cant fix that, u need 2 new panels and lots of welding/ paint

also whats up with the shredded tire

Gregboat 03-11-2015 09:18 AM

The guy we bought it from had a flat tire on the highway and it caused it to tear off some panel.

SuperChomely 03-11-2015 09:18 AM

Also he rear ended a guy so the front trunk is stuck and the headlights are stuck up.

Gregboat 03-11-2015 09:20 AM

Hence the fact that we paid $700 for it. lol

Most importantly its only got 230,000kms and the motor runs like a top.

Do you think it would be worth ordering something like this?
Toyota MR2

Gregboat 03-11-2015 09:22 AM

Also for the record, its got a brand new tire on it now that the previous owner paid for.

my shop would quotw this as a job worth 4k, thats taking a gamble with unknown rust underneath

Gregboat 03-11-2015 09:31 AM

To give you an idea of what are plan is:

We bought the car because neither of us have had any real experience doing bodywork. This car is meant to be a project that is done entirely by us and no shops to help us learn invaluable experience with minimal risk.

If it was your car what would you do? Do you think a replacement panel is the best bet?

SuperChomely 03-11-2015 09:33 AM

Also, under the car is strangely rust free.

ts14 03-11-2015 09:38 AM

ur best bet is to cut a setion from a donor mr2. that way ur getting whatever extra parts and etc

its not going to be easy but u have to first mark how much needs to be cut from this car, find a donor and cut 6-10 inches extra aftre the marking so you have some playing room to make mistakes and what not.

hard part will be making sure the panel is aligned and then u can weld away

Gregboat 03-11-2015 09:40 AM

Well, its time to scout craigslist and pick and pull.
Thanks for the advice!

How's your shop doing?

Off topic...Is that the MR2 that was/is for sale for $700?

Sure is!

CCA-Dave 03-11-2015 10:05 AM

On topic...we call a car like that a "Parts Car". With rot like that I find it highly unlikely the underside and the rest of the shell is "rust free", that is a lot of corrosion. Guaranteed that thing is going to have a lot of hidden rust waiting to poke through in future years. If it's got a good drivetrain, good interior, etc. You take your $700 car, find a non-running or tired MR2 with a good body and spend your summer months learning how to transfer the best of everything to the good shell. You will end up MILES ahead of trying to repair this one.

Yeah....if that car was only $700 I wouldn't fix it. Properly done you are probably looking at 1.5-2k at minimum and you can get another MR2 for not much more than that...

That's an interesting point that you raise about it being a parts car. But honestly, if I was really into owning a MR2 that bad that would be a totally viable way to go. But we bought it to learn how to fix bodywork and other little things (this car is neither of our daily drivers and is in a shop). We just plan on fixing it up a little without spending too much money.

Simply put this car is a cheap learning curve split between two people.
Heres a pic of it in on the street near our shop.
