No cons, just do it. If you were too lazy to upgrade to windows 8 when it was $15 now you have no excuse :P

I might try out 10, I've got a second licence for Windows 7 I can always go back to if it's not worth the upgrade.

There is no good reason to avoid windows 8. There are TONS of fixes and improvements made that makes Windows 7 obsolete.

Only real issue I had with 8, and even 8.1, was that compatibility mode didn't always work. My Adobe CS6 Collection and other editing software wouldn't always work with 8, so I had to downgrade my desktop back down to 7 Pro. I'm hoping 10 will fix that problem as I'm intrigued by 10.

I've been using CS6 since day 1, never had a problem, ever. If there's a problem, it's probably not related to 8.
The onyl software that has compatibility issues are older programs made for Windows XP era.. Shitty drivers, stuff like that.
The only real problem with Windows 8 was the stupid tablet interface they stuck on top. But that was easy to remove, making the interface 100% like Windows 7, while still being able to benefit from the fixes, speed upgrades, latest technology, etc.
That dumb interface really ruined their reputation, but really it's not that hard to bypass, and never was. So it's not 100% microsoft's fault.

Windows 8 and 8.1 are a joke. The Metro interface and apps are made for the visually impaired. They would look sized correctly on a smart phone screen, not a 24" desktop screen. I guess that could be good if I sat on my glasses.
It took Microsoft 5 years to realize that removing the Start menu was a mistake, and to correct it. Is that progress?

i thought MS removed the ability to remove the metro interface a long time ago? Which is why I hate 8/8.1 on a non-touch device and can't wait until 10

I honestly don't understand the hate with windows 8. All I ever do is hit the windows button and type what i'm looking for and hit enter. Opens right up. That's pretty much all I did from windows 98 and up too in all reality. Mind you, then it was 'start - run - 'xxxxxx'.

Does the windows 10 upgrade delete anything? As in does it have to be a fresh install or can it just upgrade to keep all files?

As always, it will give you an option to do a fresh install.
I'm basing all of this on Microsoft record history of releasing new operating systems: XP, Vista, 7, and 8.

The first thing I disabled or bypassed was the Metro screen. After that, the OS functions basically the same as Windows 7. I'm on the desktop mode all the time for my PC and laptop. For the tablet, I like to use the Metro interface as everything is laid out for easy access.

Side question - Is Windows 7 nearing end-of-life hence the encouragement to upgrade to Windows 10?
My Windows 7 (Home Premium - legitimate) is suffering from a problematic memory leak which bricks my PC for a solid 30 mins and Microsoft isn't interested in resolving it. I'm hoping the free upgrade to Windows 10 will alleviate the problem.

is there any way to find out if windows 10 will impact the performance of my current 8.1 laptop? 8.1 is a little sluggish but nothing too bad.

If I upgrade to 10, and decide I want to go back to 7, is that an easy process? I assume I'd have to wipe everything and do a clean install of 7, right? Would my OEM license for 7 still activate ok?

Windows 7 may get an extension considering it's the new "XP"
But again, Windows 10 will be the "last" edition of Windows. I can see everybody jumping on this edition from Windows 7.

Did MS mention an expiry date on when this upgrade offer is available?
I belong to the if it ain't broke don't fix it camp. Everything's working fine and I'd rather not spend the time to meddle with things if I don't have to. |
