Sure you can look at Garrison being given away for Vey, but also remember the cap space that move freed up. Plus remember that were it not for the olympics, there was a good chance Luongo would not have even reported to Canucks training camp in 2014; and how pouty he got when he was snubbed from the Heritage Classic after returning from those same Olympics. I'm a big Luongo supporter, but his time here was done one way or other and the fact we got anything back for him at all given the restrictive circumstances is good enough for me.
I think unofficially he announced it prior to winning the cup even | Except, in the case of Garrison, we never used that cap space this year (roughly $3M cap space most of the season) and we ended up giving almost all of Garrison's cap hit to a substantially worse dman in Sbisa for next year and into the future.
And, given that Benning had said all year that he wasn't going to pick up rentals at the deadline, it's not like there was a plan in place to use that cap space to pick up a highly-paid rental.
As for Luongo, he should've been dealt years ago, once it was known he no longer wished to be here. Dealing Schneider was a terrible choice (again, choosing the guy that doesn't want to be here rather than the one who does), but Horvat is softening that blow. |
