"Hyper Hatch" - Audi RS3 Hatchback - Jalopnik and Xcar

RS3 on the North American shore?

Why yes... but only the sedan 4 door version FOR NOW in the near future.

It would be awesome if it came in a hatchback on the North American shore, but the sedan version is better than no RS3 at all.

Here is a recent article on the Hatchback RS3, termed a "Hyper Hatch":

Does The Audi RS3 Usher In The Age Of The Hyper Hatch?

Quote:
The motoring press came up with the term “hypercar” when fast-moving objects like the Porsche 918, the McLaren P1 and the LaFerrari started opening dimensional portals around the likes of a 911 Turbo S, the 458 Italia or the 12C. Now, Audi is kind of doing a little bit of the same with the RS3. Which is coming to America, just probably as a sedan instead of a hatch.

XCar’s Alex Goy argues that by offering all the comfort of a maxed out S3 while also giving you a 2.5 liter five-cylinder turbo producing almost as much power as the first Audi R8’s 4.2 liter V8 did back in 2008, the 362 horsepower Audi RS3 is more than just a hot hatch positioned high above the Golf R. With Quattro all-wheel drive and 342 pound-feet of torque on tap, this car is on a whole new level.

Of course the RS3 has to be a bit schizophrenic despite nobody planning to take it to the track. This is no Honda Civic Type R, although in a straight line, it will still smoke said hardcore hot hatch in a heartbeat.

Audi’s fastest compact will also reach 62 mph in 4.3 seconds and its seven-speed automatic will only switch to top gear shortly before topping out at 174 mph. That’s bonkers fast for a hatchback.
Some car video porn, starring the RS3 Hatch and 1984 Audi Sport Quattro S1 Rally Car:

Xcar's Youtube review:

What do you guys think about the "Hyper hatch" moniker for the RS3?

Official, but only available late 2017 with a new facelift:

2018 Audi RS 3 Sedan confirmed - QuattroWorld

Quote:
Following up on our earlier post about the state of Audi Sport Models in North America, today we learned some exciting news from several sources at the Audi Summit for Audi of America employees. Audi executives confirmed that the Audi RS 3 Sedan is a GO.

Up until now there has been little information about the possibility of an Audi RS 3 sedan. Even our spy photographers have failed to catch a sign of an RS 3 Sedan testing.

Audi RS 3 Sedan

This image has been making the rounds. It is a apparently a capture from video that was played during the presentation. We cannot confirm yet, if it 100% represents the final production version.

What we know:

+400 Horsepower from an all new aluminum block 2.5-Liter inline-5 engine
7-Speed S-Tronic Gearbox
Optional Audi Virtual Cockpit
Optional Audi RS 3 specific shell seats
It will have a facelifted appearance vs current RS 3 Sportback
New headlight design and front grill
Wider track than the S3
It will be awesome!
Personally, it's "meh".

The current gen A3/S3 front looks better and more striking, but 400hp is 400hp... it will be a super sleeper for sure.

S-tronic ...

I'd want that much bonkers with a manual to feel like the OG Ur quattro. The hatch would probably make it super practical, but since there's such an aversion to hatches (just look at the A3 Sportback in North America being a PHV only), it's a pipe dream.

It's a little heavier than the S3 due to the 5 cylinders instead of 4, but 400hp versus 292 hp for a light compact sedan would mean:

probably 0 to 60 in under 3.8 seconds and the RS3 will be the current lowest end / priced RS model.
