Head Gasket replacment on a Civic cost?

Anyone know the cost of replacing a head gasket on a Civic with a B18. The person I sold my car to just got quoted $2000. That seems way to high to me.

It really depends what is involved? Just the gasket? or include things like leak down tests etc, testing and decking the head, cleanup of the milk shake all over the place? Ancillary things?

You have no obligation to help the person.

Not totally unreasonable if the machine shop is redoing everything (guides, seals, decking, etc) and the shop is also changing the timing belt, w/p, gaskets and seals, acc. belts, headbolts, etc etc.

Given how much he paid for the car though, I wouldn't be surprised if he's getting gouged.

It's kinda funny cause no one actually confirmed what engine is in the car lol
Spoiler!

Seems kinda expensive, I'm pretty sure you can almost replace the whole engine for that price lol

Quick anecdote. Friend of mine went down to the states a few days ago in his EM Civic. While there, he lost compression in 3 out of 4 cylinders. Had a shop diagnose it and was told it was his head gasket. The price that they quoted? Seven thousand freakin' dollars.

Some shops either think people are that gullible or they just really didn't want to do the job.

If it's a straight up headgasket job with no head decking or anything it's a 2 hour job. Head off, scrape old gasket off, put new one on. Done.

Guys have done this AT the track in the pits between runs.

Berz out.

B18c block
B16a em1 sir head

Hope that clarifies it for you.

That head gasket quote is about $1k too much.

Parts are $150-200 on the high end of the scale
Labour is about 4hrs

Then machine shop costs which would be a clean, pressure test and deck the head, which is $150, again on the high end.

Labour rates always fluctuate depend on shops bwtn $80-$120hr.

With that said, best case, $620, worst case, $830

Hope that helps.

And it looks like they are taking me to court.

Coles notes:
Parked the car in a garage for about a year and a half.
got it insured.
A guy in his late 40's really wanted to buy the car and made me an offer.
Sold the car.
Few weeks later the head gasket blows confirmed by their mechanic.
Don't have the money to fix right away.
Later go to a second shop and they say the engine was JB welded together and the engine should be replace.
I get an email saying I should pay half.
I told them the contract they made up states the car is sold as is with no warranties or guarantees expressed or implied.
They talked to a lawyer and now want to take me to court.

The car was running like a beast after the swap. Did a run up to Tofino and back and was running great.

It became their problem the moment the paperwork was processed, why are they coming at you 4 months later?

Can they do that? Private sale = buyer beware. How is a private seller obligated to cover repair cost after sale without an agreement between the two parties.

Isn't this just a case of caveat emptor? Does the buyer and their lawyer actually think they have a chance? underscore is right, the buyer signed the paperwork for ownership of the vehicle, as is.

I'm pretty sure we know the answer, but for clarification... Was this a private sale?

Keep us updated.

they can only get you if they have proof tat you lied in the sale ie. if you say the engine hasnt been swapped and it has. but if they didnt ask the right questions and were surprised by something then its their fault

also. if the car ran for even a day i think your hands are clean

problem with any car that sits is that they still age and gaskets get brittle.

a friend bought a mint ef with alot of maintenance records. problem is that the car sat in a garage for 2 years prior to the sale 2 weeks later almost every seal was leaking. vacuum leak, oil leak and headgasket all around the same time. this why its important to run a stored car on a weekly/by-weekly basis

only if he lied about something in the sale, but even then time will be a factor

They can't do shit at all so don't worry about a thing. If they were concerned before hand they should of got it inspected first... It happened two weeks later, maybe the guy was rat bagging it, thinking he was Paul Walker and blew the motor himself redlining it.

Don't worry about shit, he's just trying to scare you into paying for his fuck up.

If you read Jalopnik, Steve Lehto has a few articles that talk about this.
