TAIPEI, Taiwan — More than 400 people, many of them seriously burned, remained in hospitals Sunday after a fire spread into a crowd of spectators at a music party at a Taiwan water park, authorities said.
An accidental explosion of a colored theatrical powder thrown from the stage in front of about 1,000 people sparked the fire late Saturday, according to the local fire agency and media. The powder for the one-time event, called "Color Play Asia," ignited along the ground, mainly burning people's lower bodies, said Wang Wei-sheng, a liaison with the New Taipei City fire department command center.
Many of the victims were in their teens and '20s, Focus Taiwan reported.

The exact cause of the fire was still being investigated, but Taiwan Premier Mao Chih-kuo banned public activities that use the colored powder.
The fire injured a total of 519 people at the Formosa Water Park in New Taipei City, according to a statement from the city government's health bureau. It said 419 remained hospitalized on Sunday afternoon, about half of whom were seriously injured, including 184 in intensive care. Apart from Taiwanese, the victims included four people from Hong Kong, two from the Chinese mainland and one each from Macau, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. The nationalities of three other foreigners were not provided.

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou visited burn victims at a hospital in Taipei on Sunday afternoon. He said authorities would do their best to ensure victims receive "the best medical care," and to find out what was responsible for the "tragic incident."
Taiwan's state-run Central News Agency reported that police were questioning two park workers who had launched the powder, as well as the party's on-site organizer and two technicians. They may face charges of professional negligence causing serious injuries and endangering the public, it said.

Fire broke out after flammable powder apparently exploded on stage during a Color Play Asia party at Formosa Fun Coast. At these festivals, dancing patrons are sprayed with colorful clouds of powder, Reuters reports.
The explosions took place at about 8:30 p.m. local time, CNA reports. Though local firefighters were able to extinguish the fires quickly, a reported 516 people were injured, with eight in critical condition.
The victims included four mainland Chinese and two foreigners. An 18-year-old from Taiwan was burned on 90 percent of her body.
Some injured victims were laid out on inflatable pool tubes and sent to local hospitals, while others are being tended to on the premises.

yeah saw it on the news the other day, the powder they use is made out of corn i hear and it caught a spark or something and the whole place lit up, tbh i'm surprised it hasn't happened more often as supposedly the powder they use is the same as the ones used at all these events worldwide
its such a horrible sight, that scene they show with the fire ablaze and you can make out a sea of people running through it

It's called dust explosion. It happens during high concentration of powders in the air and the threshold of temperature/fire is breached.
It usually happens in close spaces as it's easier to get the concentration up.
However, given enough density, it could happen open air.
i heard that the lights used generated so much heat that cause a small fire, then someone used a fire extinguisher to try & put out that fire
& that made it worst period, which cause all this

My thoughts go with the victims.
Yep, I just assumed these clubs/parties/raves used something that wasn't easily flammable but I guess not :/

Well, pretty much any dust particles can burn. The only difference is the point where the chemical reaction takes place.
There has been cases of metal dust explosion (yes, metal) and its temperature ranged around 3000 celcius, causing havoc on whatever it touches.
The incident in Taiwan is especially bad because not only the density was high, but cornstarch (the powder used for Color Runs) is very flammable, has mass to support the burning to last and it's hydrophobic (making it difficult to get off).

Yeah.. not only is it quite a bit of dust floating around, it's really just colored corn starch.

These color runs market themselves as charities but in reality they are 'for profit' companies. They probably donate less than 5% of earnings.
I don't understand why people would want to pay a fee to run around. Guess its another reason to be cool.

From my understanding this wasn't a run, but a concert in a waterpark.
Did it not occur to to the manufacturer that they use this powder at functions with hundreds or thousands of people? They didn't think someone might light up a cigarette??
As of yesterday 3 people have died from their burn injuries... one girl was 95% burnt.
More than 300 are still in intensive care, I would think there are many with lung burns from trying to run through that inferno...
Heart goes out to them to go through this experience :(

So people spray powered colour full of chemicals on themselves and breathe it through their lungs. I see no point in these colour runs and colour parties. The organizers should have known if it was flammable or not. The powder they used was probably some cheaper type made in asia.

ya this wasnt the run it was just an event, my bad on that one
color run has stop alot of its major events ATM & will be reorganizing the time table as well as checking all the cornstarch

Hundreds of Millions of people in India throw coloured powder during the festival of Holi with no fire problems. This has been going on for hundreds of years. Also I believe it was the hot halogen lights that was the ignition source.
