yeah saw it on the news the other day, the powder they use is made out of corn i hear and it caught a spark or something and the whole place lit up, tbh i'm surprised it hasn't happened more often as supposedly the powder they use is the same as the ones used at all these events worldwide

its such a horrible sight, that scene they show with the fire ablaze and you can make out a sea of people running through it

It's called dust explosion. It happens during high concentration of powders in the air and the threshold of temperature/fire is breached.
It usually happens in close spaces as it's easier to get the concentration up.

However, given enough density, it could happen open air.

Here's the test done by Mythbusters:

My thoughts go with the victims.

i heard that the lights used generated so much heat that cause a small fire, then someone used a fire extinguisher to try & put out that fire

& that made it worst period, which cause all this

Yep, I just assumed these clubs/parties/raves used something that wasn't easily flammable but I guess not :/

Well, pretty much any dust particles can burn. The only difference is the point where the chemical reaction takes place.

There has been cases of metal dust explosion (yes, metal) and its temperature ranged around 3000 celcius, causing havoc on whatever it touches.

The incident in Taiwan is especially bad because not only the density was high, but cornstarch (the powder used for Color Runs) is very flammable, has mass to support the burning to last and it's hydrophobic (making it difficult to get off).

Yeah.. not only is it quite a bit of dust floating around, it's really just colored corn starch.

That's what inspired these parties, yes.

And speaking of powder exploding, this is footage from one test we ran prior to shooting an action sequence. Cremora goodness:

These color runs market themselves as charities but in reality they are 'for profit' companies. They probably donate less than 5% of earnings.

I don't understand why people would want to pay a fee to run around. Guess its another reason to be cool.

From my understanding this wasn't a run, but a concert in a waterpark.

Did it not occur to to the manufacturer that they use this powder at functions with hundreds or thousands of people? They didn't think someone might light up a cigarette??

As of yesterday 3 people have died from their burn injuries... one girl was 95% burnt.
More than 300 are still in intensive care, I would think there are many with lung burns from trying to run through that inferno...

Heart goes out to them to go through this experience

So people spray powered colour full of chemicals on themselves and breathe it through their lungs. I see no point in these colour runs and colour parties. The organizers should have known if it was flammable or not. The powder they used was probably some cheaper type made in asia.

Hundreds of Millions of people in India throw coloured powder during the festival of Holi with no fire problems. This has been going on for hundreds of years. Also I believe it was the hot halogen lights that was the ignition source.
