Colour: Baseboard, door trim

I'm painting my walls a medium shade of gray with white baseboards. So far, I've left the door trim alone (dark wood + dark wood door). Am I breaking a cardinal rule? I have a nagging feeling that it's an abrupt color change from white baseboard to a brown door trim.

If I paint the door trim white and leave the door brown, will that look okay? I want to paint the doors black, but I feel the room will be extra dark already considering the wall color (dark gray) + furniture (black).

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

So something similar to this?

Personally I think it would look a bit strange, you could always use photoshop to see what it would look like?

Yeah, pretty much. My baseboard ends at the door trim and its brown. Compared to the picture, my door trim and door have a more wooden look (lighter brown), so if I paint the door trim white, would the door need a paint job too?

If it's a really dark gray on the walls I would either paint the door white to match the molding or paint it a darker colour like in the picture above (personally I would do the white myself, I think it looks much cleaner). If it's a lighter gray, depending on the type/shade of wood you might be able to get away with leaving it as is. Pictures for reference might help

If your base is white I don't have a problem with it.

The problem becomes when you paint the casing the same color as the wall then it comes time to change the wall color
