I have a hyundai eleantra..

Hyundai wants $200 for new pads and charge for 1/2hr labour.. Just for the front set..

Any place that sells pads and install for a fair price and possible machine rotors...
Perfer richmond, if possible..

Is it nesscessary to machine rotors when installing new pads??

$200 for new, OEM pads is a decent price....if it includes machining the rotors.

$200 for pads alone is a joke for any OE pads.

OE Tundra pads are only $114 for a set and there 4 times the size of the ones you us. If that price included machining of the front rotors as well then its not bad at all.
Infact, if what you quoted is for new pads, machined and installed then its a decent price.

As for putting new pads in, its a good idea to have the rotors machined when you install pads as the surface they have after the old pads is glazed and not uniform so the new pads will not seat in properly against them and you will not have 100% contact and loose braking force. Many people do this just to save a few $$ but its your brakes, spend the little extra and cheap out on something a little less crucial to the operation of the car IMO.

the last time i had to change brake pads the mechanic i went to didn't bother with machining the old rotors and opted to replace them with new because he said the rates machine shops charge these days is getting to the point it's almost the same as new for a regular blank... is this true?

Depends on the cost of same quality rotors. Machining is about 20-25/ea so if you have $100 rotors with lots of meat left on them, sure it's worth it. If it's a Civic with $20-30 rotors, just re/re with new stuff - the downtime to get them machined isn't even worth it.

I got new, OEM rotors for my GF's car when I did her last brake job and had the old ones machined when it was convenient, so next time I do brakes, the rotors are ready to go.

If you are not using the car for track use I would get in touch with Dymax auto parts in richmond, they have awesome prices for pads and rotors.

If you have the means (tools and space), do the brake job yourself. The difficult level is slightly higher than an oil change.

lordco sells oem brake pads?

Hyundai doesn't make brake pads so none of them are really "OEM"

I think there needs to be clarification on the usage of OE and OEM.

OE is the original manufacturer meaning if you go to Honda, and you want a Honda motor, Honda is the manufacturer of the motor.

OEM is the original equipment manufacturer. This means a part was manufactured by a different manufacturer to a specification.

Honda does not make its own brake pads, therefore, they will subcontract their brake pads to let's say Aisin, who will make the pads to Honda's specification and brand them as "Honda." If you go to Lordco and want an OEM pad, it may show up with a brand like Aisin, Beck/Arnley, etc.

I think 200-300 is fair and 1/2 hour?.. I see it as Hyundai trying to keep you as a service customer.

While it is easy job to do. It will get dirty.

OE pads are usually $100 after taxes at my dealership.. if you want to slap on pads, that's .5hr of labour. with machining its 1.4hrs. Reasonable..

$200 is pretty reasonable for a dealership for parts and labor. All dealers as far as I know will machine the rotors unless the customer declines it.

I don't understand why the dealership would even give him a price to install the pads, w/o machining/replacing rotors. At all the schools and shops I've worked at, I've always been taught that new pads = new surface.

Obviously, you can use your own discretion if you're the customer or DIY'ing, I'm just surprised a dealer would quote as such.

Get some clarification on what $370 includes. Like the other guys have mentioned, the rotors "should" be machined to match the new surface of the pads. However, your mileage may vary.

Don't be afraid to shop around - you have options. Don't forget the RS sponsors and other independent shops. Prices may vary, but sometimes, the sponsors will go above and beyond for you and to keep you as a customer.
