Sony Xperia Z5 Series

Compact 4.6" 720p
vanilla 5.2" 1080p
Premium 5.5" 2160p

23MP camera with 30ms AF (rumoured 6-element lens)
waterproof
fingerprint sensor on side power button
'2 day battery life'

rumoured internals SD 810/3 GB memory/32GB flash

so unless the Sony's marketing director made a mistake, this will be the world's first 4K mobile device.

i really hope they can put in the Snapdragon 820 and 4GB mem...that internal with 808 ppi

Xperias in my experience has some of the best battery life on Android with the Stamina mode...the UI is really light too. Downside is updates usually take forever to be pushed out and Sony Mobile has been on a decline since last year...may be that's why they're putting such beefy specs to avoid becoming the almost-dead HTC

These phones are gonna be announced tomorrow.

Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium handled on video ahead of launch

snapdragon 810 + 4k screen? i guess they're planning on this thing melting in peoples hands/pockets

the 810 isn't exactly a rumour any longer since video of the sony rep going over the phone/specs with bloggers over at the pre-IFA events have leaked

i read that the 810 v2 overheats too so :/

I was going to snap this phone up, since i'd been waiting for an Xperia Z that met all my requirements, but reading about the overheating or under-performance (heard a 'fix' was to throttle the chip) has me turned off

Yeah 820 is not ready for prime time and the 810 is definitely a downer...

but I feel the 810 overheating is kinda overblown considering all the upcoming ones are supposedly v2.1? If OnePlus2 and M9 are using that I bet the Sony is also using it.

HTC: One M9 already using Snapdragon 810 v2.1 | Android Central

I'm curious if 810 supports 4K60...820 supports HDMI 2.0 but I haven't read anything about the 810 regarding this....the 4K VR possibility is pretty exciting

i really like on-screen keys ala Nexus...makes the phone look clean and simple.

What's this massively ugly door? SIM + microSD?

that is a huge cap

just read some Oppo 9 rumours, saying it'll be using the 810, so im hoping the reviews will be positive and overheating is a non-issue since my N5 is falling apart but i have a feeling i may want to wait for the Z6 :/

Official press release
Sony unveils next-generation smartphone camera with Xperia? Z5 and Xperia? Z5 Compact, and the world?s first 4Kš smartphone˛ Xperia? Z5 Premium | Sony Smartphones

May be it's just the sony alpha fan boy in me but the camera specs are pretty crazy
PDAF backlit sensor trickled down from the RX100iv/A7Rii ...but until we get sample images the jury is still out

and i forgot about remote play support since the Z3
Spoiler!

I dont know if my dying phone can last until November...so close to pulling the trigger on Note 5

i wish the Z5 Premium or Compact came in Green too (like the regular Z5)

been wanting a green one for a long time :/

the compact only comes in pink, yellow, white, black

i love the size of the compact, and i like that the premium is 4k bah

i was thinking about the S6 edge or Note Edge too but i think i'll go with the Z5, that is after we find out about the overheating

The only thing I hate about my Z3 compact is the fact that the camera sucks and charging it sucks since you have to open the flops every single time or pay extra for the docking station. However with the docking station you can't use a case. Also looking online case for the Z3 compact doens't look very good for some reason and there is a very limited choice.

Also read some bloggers state that they filmed in 4k for about 10+ mins and the phone was only slightly warm, so that's a positive

Premium's screen under the microscope

that's a great idea to render most things at 1080p and only run media in 4k

new memory mgmt...i doubt caching multimedia will actually improve battery life much, interesting nonetheless they'd R&D that

really excited they teased VR, sounds like they're either making a holder like gearVR/google cardboard or better yet adding support for Playstation's Project Morpheus.

Also in terms of memory, we’ve also looked to optimize Xperia Z5 Premium’s memory on display feature – the data transfer between processor and device is optimized so Xperia Z5 Premium’s display memory technology remembers the display of images seen on your smartphone and caches the image or video so that you don’t need to reload the full image each time you view it – saving on battery power in the process

...

We also believe Xperia Z5 Premium is capable of offering the clearest, sharpest Virtual Reality platform – we’re working on a few things here internally, so stay tuned for more news soon.

unlocked Z5 Canada pricing seems pretty fair/competitive

SONY... announce North American price & availability of Z5 Premium...it's like they really want to go out of business, last I read Sony Mobile was bleeding $11M daily
I'm about to pull the trigger and import one....already for sale in Taiwan. I'm assuming OTA won't work outside of its home region? Perhaps can be updated via Sony TW's website?

I think as long as you get the "sony" version, you'll get OTA's.

If you were to import from Taiwan, a taiwanese carrier branded phone, then you'd have issues.

a Premium Dual just arrived from HK

to my surprise it's black, was expecting a chrome one so I go and check my history and sure enough I ordered black
oh well it's gonna be in a case 99% of the time anyways

haven't even updated it yet, first thing I notice is it runs VERY WARM, even a minute into a 4K GoPro playback
