Lol... you think your 40k of tuition is bad? Imagine paying the same 40K tuition multiple times in your life as you subsidize others via taxes.

If you go to school for something that actually has career options, the student debt should not be overwhelming. If you go to school to study some useless liberal arts degree then yes it probably sucks having a large debt load and an education that's worthless in the work world.

Imagine free tuition, how many artists, journalists, and poly sci majors you would subsidize? Imagine the resulting chaos of an influx of these people in society who can't get a job and are used to living off gov. assistance.

Canadian tuition costs are very reasonable compared to the USA, England, Australia, Japan Etc. and they are dirt cheap in Quebec. Take a look at how the policies in QC regarding cheap tuition contribute to their "have not" status. Luckily Quebec with their bleeding heart socialist policies can continuously withdraw from the "Bank of Other Provinces"... Canada as a country does not have this luxury.

Quebec receives the largest portion of equalization payments of any Province, they also happen to be by far the most left leaning of any of the Provinces... so if the country as a whole goes this direction... where does the money come from? Increasing taxes of course, substantially. Interestingly enough the 6B in transfer funds Quebec received in 2010-2011 made up 1.7% of their GDP, 3x their Provincial deficit, and nearly 10% of the total Provincial budget. (Source below)

http://www.budget.finances.gouv.qc.c...BudgetPlan.pdf

IMO when you subsidize something like tuition to the point of it being free for the user, you remove any personal accountability from the picture.

In case anyone is wondering, BC Is a have Province, you pay more into equalization than you get back.

Mehhh for all the people voting dipper or green, I question your understanding of global macroeconomics - Canada is not nearly as rich as people seem to think it is.

You think that is crazy check out the rest of the cons. Stockwell Day was put in charge of the treasury board by Harper in 2010. Stockwell Day believes man hunted dinosaurs. He was also at one point the head of the Canadian Alliance before Harper took over and merged with the PC party.

There are a number of others just like him.

Vote for Mulcair or Trudeau. Apparently Harper was too dumb to realize we are the richest country in the world and we can give our people everything they want.

if done right i think "free" education could work, although perhaps not in a country such as Canada with the mentality "students" have

Have a bunch of relatives in Finland where education is "free" even for people from abroad. However, the entrance requirements are fucking crazy, as are the exams to even be accepted into post-secondary education that is subsidized by the govt.

a few second relatives i met while there, seemingly very intelligent people, had been studying for over a year simply to write the entry exams. Following up with them, 2/3 went to the Netherlands for school and paid out of pocket because they could not cut the entry requirements to go to school in Finland in the field they wanted.

If STRICT requirements were put in place our post-secondary system would probably be in better shape, although the demographics would probably be pretty similar, it would weed out a lot of students who barely scraped by in HS, get into post-secondary for a BA in some bullshit then whine for the next 15 years about student loans

Where do the trades people and entrepreneurs line up for their free handouts after the college drop outs get their student loans erased and the entitlement-generation gets their free tuition paid for by the people who didn't spend 8 years in school earning an arts degree and putting rims on their car?

Lol @ all the hate on "Arts" students here. Arts student here and I personally have never had a problem finding work since I was 15. And right now I don't even have my degree yet (1.5 years to go) but I'm making $22/hr at my current part-time job. Enough to pay for school each semester without taking loans or un-necessary debt.

Personally, I think it has less to do with one's degree than it does with people's sense of entitlement and their misplaced idea that they should finish school as fast as possible in order to find a job. I know a lot of people who graduated with many different majors, who are unable to find work because they wanted to finish in 4 years instead of taking their time to do co-ops, internships, or even just plain work so they can gain competencies that employers are looking for besides a degree.

The amount of people I've met who want $15/hr for a low-skilled McJob is insane... simply because they have a stamped piece of paper with zero "real work" credentials to back it up. Vancouver may be an overpriced city but don't blame the system for your lack of work ethic!

It's funny that you mention this as, if anyone took the time to read their platform, they actually reference Finland as one of several countries they would like to emulate in this regard. Also, the term "qualifying students" is used as well as eliminating interest on NEW student loans.

While they don't go into great detail on this topic (only a single page), it seems very much like this isn't the free education for all that some posters here seem to believe it is.

I can't believe anyone could believe that the free education thing means you can just go take whatever the fuck you want whenever you want. Obviously the system would be restructured with academic goals you must meet as well as strict enterance requirements.
Keep in mind even if school is free, you are still broke as fuck while you are in it. It's not fun working your ass off for no money. The majority of people have an end goal.

You couldn't make entrance requirements "strict" in Canada, the schools would be half empty.

I think you would be shocked to find the number of people who are in post secondary that don't actually have an end goal... beyond graduating.

For example, my brother has BA w/ honors in archeology/classics from UofA and a MA in anthro from Leicester... he's never ever worked a day in a related field or performed any research. So what was his thinking/end goal... I have no idea.

I can tell you I've coddled his socialist ass through life for the last 7 years hiring him over and over again even though he is a lazy piece of shit and gets next to nothing done. He is however, very smart, it's almost as if his end goal was to "be the smartest guy in the room", he likes to use big words that are so uncommon nobody will understand, then when the people to which he is speaking look lost, he gives them the "Oh, you don't understand word X?"

If you've ever read a Christopher Hitchens book.. he basically talks like that atheist fundamentalist lunatic. (I'm an atheist, but that man was just hateful towards religion.)

Not even kidding, if tuition fees ever get eliminated I'll be all over the JD lol Then when I grad I'll contribute nothing to society beyond sucking the financial health out of couples going through divorce

Well, it doesn't sound like they're eliminating tuition fees. It sounds like they plan to make it free for a select few and cheaper for everyone else.

Green Party platform promises to expand rail, eliminate tuition - Politics - CBC News

No point in picking on a party for having candidates who are losers or have silly beliefs (Day), every party has its fair share of donkeys.

I really like Elizabeth May as a person, and of the four (five if you count Duceppe but fuck him) she definitely seems the most honest, approachable, personable and likable but her party doesn't have a hope in hell of doing anything - their goal seems to be to keep their one or two seats in the house of commons intact - and they're a bit too extreme left for my tastes.

Harper's policies do affect the average Canadian given that he's basically been in power since 2006. Also, the "muzzling" is very real - there is a lot of information that federal scientists cannot divulge to the public under the current regime.
