Shaw Advanced WiFi Modem

Has anybody using this modem/router? Been using it for 2 months or so, I haven't been too happy with the WiFi connection around the house. Would you guys recommend on using a third party router?
Model: Cisco DPC3848V

I have the model they were offering before that one and the wireless on the modem/router combo sucks. Mine actually fried and died so I went in to get it replaced, when I asked to put it into bridge mode so I could use my own router, the guy offered the one you have for a small fee. Glad I didn't end up doing it seeing as their combos still suck.

I would definitely call them and put it into bridge mode and use your own router, double check you can even get it changed to bridge mode though. Since its a new combo, I haven't heard too many people with it or complaints.

I got the SBG6782 when I signed up about a year ago, it's fucking awesome. Free hardware too when it was about $400 to buy at the time.

Typical shaw though, gave it to me for free no questions asked as a new account where as my oarents, 15+ year shaw subscribers had to fight the guy for it

That looks newer than the one I have, regardless if you're not happy with the wifi I'd suggest buying your own router and getting the Cisco put into bridge mode. When I was using the built in router I had to reboot it weekly and online gaming was terrible, with it in bridge mode and an Asus router I reset them maybe once every 6 months (probably even less often, I honestly can't remember the last time I had to).

Yeah, buy own router, call shaw to put the router into bridge mode and you'd not be happier about your wifi.

that modem/router is actually pretty good. u guys have to remember no matter how powerful ur router is, if u have a ton of wifi networks in ur area that uses the 2.4Ghz, then u'll get shitty wifi performance no matter what, re: apartments r the worst.

oh and if ur not on their internet 120 plan then no u cannot get this cisco bridged, theyll switch u to the older cisco 3825 to use ur own router. the 3825 in bridged mode being modem only is very good, ive been using it with my own router for the past 6ish years

I messed around with the 2.5ghz and 5ghz connections around the house today, for some reason the 5ghz signal and strength isn't great. as for the 2.5ghz I get full bars around the house.

the 2.4Ghz band will always have a further range than the 5Ghz band as the 5Ghz frequency wave is broadcasted a lot closer to to each other thus worst penetration through walls

The problem with higher frequencies is that it doesn't penetrate well. So if you've got a lot of walls and shit between the router and your device, it's going to penalize hard on signal.

For example, My MBP gets around 500Mbps (actual throughput) when I am upstairs where the router is, and only about 280 when I'm downstairs.

If your place is complicated, try to buy a repeater/extender. I have one just at the stairs for the TV, which is at the other end of first floor. Without it, I'm not able to watch 4K stuff streaming off my NAS smoothly.
