i paid 200 for a white nike winter jacket and a $60 gap winter jacket was worlds warmer when weather hit 20- 
Atom LT would be perfect for vancity weather...i'd wear a shell if it was windy & rainy as hell tho.

I only started wearing real jackets within the last few years. I layer like crazy all year round since my blood runs cold. the most I've spent on a jacket is a Calvin Klein parka for $120 from Winners lol. I thought that was a lot but reading this thread just made my jaw drop lol

There is absolutely no NEED for an expensive jacket in Vancouver/Lower Mainland, it's just people who want to spent money on expensive things so people know they can afford it. Quote:

Although we might not need a $250+ CG or Arc'teryx jacket since we don't get a whole lot of harsh winter weather, is the idea of spending this much valuable due to the general longevity/warranty these high end jackets offer?

the cheapest NF jacket has a lifetime warranty. i bought my old one at an outlet like 15 years ago. granted it did delaminate after about 7 years, and at the time i didn't think to warranty it, but it's definitely good enough for all but standing in the rain for an hour straight. i think at the time i paid like $70USD.

I was born in Sask, spent a big chunk of my childhood in Calgary, before moving here - so actual harsh winters were very much the norm for most of my childhood in otherwords. today, I wore a beater, an underarmour thermal, my dress shirt + tie, as well as the "winter" jacket supplied by work (fleece lined), as well as thermal underwear underneath my dress pants. today, on october 13th. didn't sweat, was a rather good temperature all day actually. are you going to continue to tell me that i'm only wearing my Goose jacket at this time of year for show?
for the record, i have yet to pull it out of the closet, but there are nights sitting on the patio that i've been tempted to. by november it'll be out, that i can almost guarantee

dont judge me,i work outdoors and its duel use,ALPHA FL has kept me warm in the worst of winds and is breathable without sweating my balls off when you really get moving,who even knows if those ones you named are like sauna suits...even the pants are breathable hauling ass

actually the alpha fl is a pretty nice choice. if you wore an alpha sv to get from your car to the office then you would get judged a little :P
nothing wrong with wanting nice things I'm just saying that some people think they need to spend top dollar to stay warm or dry.

I have both a Beta AR and Beta SL soft shell jacket, usually mated with a Cerium LT as an inner layer during winter. Yes, a North Face shell can be had for cheaper and also has a lifetime warranty like Arcteryx. However, I bought them for Interior BC winter living and wanted something lightweight and breathable, but still warm enough for boarding on the mountains and for shoveling the snow from my driveway and nothing I could find by most companies really met what I wanted. I've also had to warranty two of my jackets this year (one due to delamination on a cuff, which they simply outright replaced with a new variation... and the other was due to a broken zipper after i got it caught in a door jam... they repaired it, no questions asked even though it was obviously impact damage lol.) I like that their shop is local so there's less wait time due to shipping for repair work. That, and I like supporting local companies.
But I do have to kinda agree. Those who buy one of those jackets simply to walk in the rain between their house and car is a little extreme.

I picked up a North Face McMurdo parka from Sporting life for $279 over the weekend.
Not as ridiculously priced as North Face or Canada Goose, but according to Outdoor Gear Lab, it's fantastic value for the money.

I got by for the last 3-4 winters in a North Face bomber that I got for $150 from Sporting Life (no, it wasn't one of the Chengman "Heatscore 700" jackets lol).
However, I'm moving to Toronto for work and had to pony up for an Arcteryx jacket... the Cold WX SV to be exact. I went for a ~5km walk wearing it the other day and was literally soaked in sweat. Keep in mind I only had a t-shirt underneath and unzipped it about halfway through. Those jackets insulate like nothing else I've ever worn before, granted prior to this coat, I've never spent more than $150 on winter wear. Assuming Canada Goose has the same level of insulation, how everybody wears them in Vancouver for daily use without dying of heatstroke is beyond me...
