Website Domains - newbie

Hey guys,

I want to make website with my own domain name. I have no experience making a website, or how to get a domain name. I know what I want is available. What are some good suggestions for sites to get a domain name, and also I can produce a website for my business.

Any suggestions would be fantastic!

Cheers!

For domain/hosting, I usually go to ca.godaddy.com. If you want something Canadian, I like canadianwebhosting.com and Doteasy.com.

I used namespro.ca for my domain name and use siteground.com for hosting. Namespro is local and has great customer service with quick response times. Haven't had any issue with Siteground either but they are US based.

godaddy.ca for domain registration (search around for coupons - lots around)
zoho.com for free email hosting
unbounce for a free landing page (presuming you are just having a web presence for your coffee shop!)

go to Free Website Builder | Create a Free Website | WIX.com super easy to build a site. You can build a site for free and they only charge you when you want a custom domain.

For my domains, I've been using 10dollar.ca for the past few years. .CA renewals are $10.45, and the original TLDs (.org, .com, .net) are $13/year. They have a simple interface that makes it easy to manage your domains. I got started on GoDaddy, but I hate their fees for every small feature, and them wanting to cram add-ons when you try to order something. Anything that they can charge you for, they will. It's USD, and our shitty dollar makes their prices even worse.

Simply put, what you need to get started on your own internet enabled website is to register for a domain name and point that name to a web host.

A domain name registrar is to register and hold your domain name for you. Usually, you pay a yearly fee of about $10.

A web host is to save and hold your website files for people on the internet to access your public data information. Quite often, a host will charge about $10 a month.

To keep things simple, try to find providers where they register a name and host a website at the same time. All the setup steps are done in one go.

This right here. Think of a web host as the shopping mall that provides the space for your store, and the registrar as sort of a phone book, where you list your address. Having the same outfit doing both mainly just makes it more convenient, as you're only dealing with one entity... but if you're planning to move to another mall every couple years, it's easier to have a separate phone book.

In any case, I use DreamHost for everything; most domains are $10-$12/year, and hosting works out to under $10/mo for as many sites, as much space, and as much traffic as I can handle. Best of all, their tech support is excellent.

I worked on a couple of other people's websites that were on GoDaddy and it was a nightmare. Kept bouncing between old and new control panels, and both were hideous. Never again.
