UBC?s Leadership Crisis Revealed in Unintentionally Leaked Gupta Docs | UBC Insiders
Shame on you UBC! Absolutely sickening that my tax money is going to a university run by a bunch of power-tripping, incompetent fools. Nowhere in the back-and-forth exchanges between the President and Chair of the Board was student's learning and research discussed, which should be the university's number one priority.
This whole thing is about keeping a bunch of bureaucrats and administrators on their fat payrolls meanwhile putting out a facade that UBC is all about innovation and change. So when Dr. Gupta tried to make some changes, he got dumped. Of course, this same ad-hoc committee has individuals with ties directly to BC liberal. I am totally shocked. Not.
UBC as an institution has done itself irreparable damage to its reputation and credibility. British Columbians needs to take a much harder look at this secretive university and how it conducts itself. All current board members, whether elected or not elected, involved in this event should resign immediately to restore some faith.

Years ago my HS English teacher blew the whistle on the disappearance of public drinking fountains at UBC which were replaced by Coca-Cola vending machines

Is anyone really surprised? At the end of the day, universities are just like any other places and institutions in the world -- people get into personal differences, fight for power, do stuff to protect their own interests, etc. A lot of the times, mission statements are only for show. Putting students first? Ha~! It is certainly one of the goals, but I can assure you, it is never the No. 1 priority.
From the exchanges that I've read, I am actually quite surprised by how Gupta wasn't more aware of / sensitive to the animosity that surrounds him. Or maybe he is, but the fact that he couldn't contain it / navigate through it definitely surprised me. I would think people operating at that executive level in large institutions have already gone through all that personnel / office & institutional politic stuff, and would be a master of handling them by the time they reach the top spot.
