BC SPCA: Adopt a dog or cat | Pet Adoption, Care & Behaviour | Animal Rescue | Advocacy

I'm not familiar with other dog shelters in BC, hopefully someone will post some.

Adoption should be your only consideration

Adopt adopt adopt! Every city should have it's own animal shelter. I know for certain Coquitlam and New West do (coquitlam is where I adopted my rats from). Also try using this link, it'll let you look in any area and includes small shelters and lesser known ones as well.

I own a doggy daycare+grooming centre and we constantly volunteer to take in rescue dogs/puppies and feed them, groom them, and foster them (without pay) while they wait to be adopted. Just adopted a 2-month old pup myself. Little guy was calling out to me

PM me if you want more info, or if you have any questions about dogs in general. We're poor and can't afford RS advertising

What a beauty skinnypupp. Love those ears.
I got this handsome idiot from animal control. He was shipped up here from a pound up in Smithers, B.C. to have a better chance at adoption.
I found him on Petfinder.com Absolutely the best way to find a dog.

I highly promote adopt if you can. I say "if you can" because I myself tried to adopt when I was looking for a puppy/dog. I filled out 3-4 adoption applications to local rescues and shelters but they all got back to me and said in their opinion I wouldn't be a suitable match for any of their dogs.

I understand that with resuces there maybe behaviour issues which may require a more specific type of owner (someone with more time, more experience, more room, etc...) But with multiple denied applications, I got pretty discouraged with some of the local agency's as it seemed like they wanted someone who owned a farm, didn't work, and had 20 years experience with dogs.

I wife and I ended up picking up this bundle of joy just about a year ago from a breeder on the island and he has become our world! I would like to think that we have raised a very well balanced dog and that this proves to ones who denied us before wrong and that we are "suitable" owners.

Some places are really picky about who they adopt their dogs to. At my wife's work, they will only give you a dog if you can walk it 2-3 times per day, or hire someone to do it for you. Also no housing estates, etc. Certain dogs have different conditions and so on.

Try petfinder.com. we adopted our 5 month old puppy from yakima washington. Was worth the drive and no problems crossing the pup over the border. Was cheaper adoption fee and came with all the shots and neuter

RAPS (Richmond Animal Protection Society) is like that as well. They're very thorough in who adopts their pets, which means that some good owners will leave empty handed, but I think it's for the best in guaranteeing that dogs go to good homes.

I know the owner of DMRS is a certified trainer and puts a lot of time into evaluating her dogs, so she has a good idea of what each needs - and doesn't need, like whether they're good with cats, kids, other dogs, etc. No rescue wants to see a dog come back to them because it doesn't work out.

That said, sometimes it's harder evaluating the person... like when you tell them the dog needs house training, and they assure you they're fine with that... then return him two weeks later because he's peeing all over the house. Like....

After meeting many dog owners around that really shouldn't own dogs then I could see why rescues and agency's woukd want to be strict in their application process.

Owning a dog is a privilege and not a right.

Keep your eyes out. Its a database of all of the rescues pretty much in North america I think. So many dogs come through there and you are bound to find what you are looking for. Especially if you are looking for a bigger dog. Husky x are so common due to all the reserve dogs.
Pit x
Shepherd x
Husky x
Lab x
Rotti x are all so common in shelters.

I heard on the news the other day that there was a puppy mill seizure in Langley, 60 dogs iirc. Once they go through the legal red tape and the dogs are brought back to health, I'm sure the majority of them will be put up for adoption.

We got our Yorkie through a seizure, years ago. The process takes time but was absolutely worth it. Contact your local SPCA to get more details how to go about adopting one of these little guys.

Hahaha yeah, Dhana Metta has a page on PetFinder, it's a source of never-ending frustration for her, with listings randomly disappearing, not updating properly, etc.

As other have said, adopt adopt adopt. I also suggest not being too dead set on a particular breed, obviously everyone has preferences but IMO the best thing to do is go visit as many animals as you can, interact with them and see which feels like a good fit for you and your family.
