Would you rather stay in Tofino or Ucluelet for the weekend?

I have to go to the island for the week for business and I have the option to be put up in Tofino or Ucluelet. HR said it's up to me on where I would want to stay.

I will be going up in the summer, but i'm not sure if that makes a difference. It'll be probably towards the end of July.

I will be there with a team of five to eight people, we're all pretty young, we love the outdoors, and don't mind partying, but we'll be mostly there for work. We do get time off though, and we heard the surfing is really good in Tofino.

If you guys had a choice, where would you stay? I know it's only about a 30min drive between the two, but where would you guys stay?

My team has pretty much told me to make the decision, so i'm trying to make the best one.

Thanks

wow.... great thread. i was thinking of planning a trip with gf to tofino, but saw that alot of airbnb rentals were situated in ucluelet. Wondered myself where to stay.

i went to tofino as a kid with my family and it was great, i really wanted to find the house we rented but seems like all the ones on airbnb don't look like the one we had at all

Tofino no question's asked if it's paid by work. It's more expensive then Ucluelet and you will be able to just walk around to check it out rather then driving 30mins if you stay in Ucluelet.

Tofino if you're not paying. Either one is good, though.

FWIW, if you fish, I've heard Ucluelet is better for fishing. I don't fish, so grain of salt on that.

Definetely Tofino if you're not paying. Rooms are at least $400+ a night in July if you want one near the Beach. Ucluelet is a hell of a lot of a cheaper during the peak season and the drive to Tofino doesn't even feel like 30mins.

* There are some nice but pretty pricey hotels on/near Chesterman's Beach, Long Beach and Cox Bay.
* Next to Chestermans is Mackenzie beach where the waves are smaller and hotels are a bit cheaper. There's a Best Western with direct access to Mackenzie so you can head out at night for a bon fire, etc. Rooms aren't great but as I said, its cheap and on the beach.
* If you have time and enjoy short hikes, Checkout the West Coast trail in Ucluelet.

Like everyone else said, stay in tofino if it's all inclusive. It's really expensive to find accommodation there. It took me a month to find a place to live while competing with everyone else, but then again ur only there for the weekend so hotels are the only way to go.

Tofino cause I've never heard of Ucluelet before  :lawl:

Wickaninnish Inn ... 1/2 way between the two. Seriously wicked place since your company is paying.

20psi 02-12-2016 01:15 PM

Tofino is worth staying in if you've never been...stay in Ucluelet the next time you come back.

EDIT: Okay, not that close, lol.

Hot Springs Cove. Awesome place, if you can get there. I went there many times with my father who was a commercial fisherman.

Long Beach is nice. Seeing these places from a boat is unforgettable.

Also, if you spot Multicartual, let us know.

If you're gonna Netflix and Chill, I don't think it matters where you go.

DragonChi 02-12-2016 03:20 PM

Uceulet has nice fishing tours, small town feel. Tofino has a hipster laid back vibe, surfing, and Pac Rim park for forest adventures.

BnB are actually reasonably priced in the summer as well...and I booked only 2 weeks ahead in august

Make sure you eat at wolf in the fog.

I've been to both in the past few years, and I now live on Vancouver Island. It really depends on what you're looking for. Each place has a top tier 'resort'. Tofino has Wickininish and Ucluelet has Blackrock. Both are expensive, but Tofino is definitely more expensive.

Tofino will definitely be a busier place in the summer. LOTS of tourists. Ucluelet us quieter.

Tofino's beaches are more the sandy beach type. Ucluelet has a lot of rocky beaches.

Fishing (if that's your thing) is great at both places. Ucluelet probably a bit better than Tofino.

Both places offer similar things to do in terms of tourist attractions. Lots of trails, and outdoor adventures like whale watching, etc.

For me, I've been to both places enough that I prefer the quietness of Ucluelet. It's a real 'getaway from it all'. Mind you, when I lived in Vancouver, Tofino was really quiet as well.

Hope that helps! :)

The Best Western is on an Indian reserve, so that could explain why it tends to be cheaper than the rest. I've stayed there on 3 occasions and it's very decent for the price and location.

I was just in Tofino for 3 nights this past family day long weekend. Stayed at the Best Western, the rooms aren't anything great, but the location is awesome. They all face the ocean, and if you are on the ground floor, you can just open your patio door and walk out onto the beach.

Tofino has better beaches to walk along than Ucluelet, especially when the tide is out. Tofino also has some awesome places to eat at. Wolf in the Fog is probably one of the top 20 restaurants I have eaten at and is worth multiple visits. If you stay at the Best Western or Wikkininish Inn, you can also walk to Tacofino and Wildside Grill. Not a far walk from Tofino Brewing Company either.

Ucluelet is good for a day trip, has some nice leisurely hikes along the cliffs, and has awesome big waves during certain parts of the year.

Jayboogz 02-15-2016 03:55 PM

Im a commercial crab fisherman in tofino. everytime my family and friends come out for a fishing trip we try to book the eagle view house (google it if interested) highest house in tofino and has a great view! tofino is more convienient than ucluelet. ive been to ucluelet many times and prefer tofino more selection on restaurants. close proximity to beaches and surfing.

tofino brewing company is a must. that kelp stout lawddd
not too many things to do out there other than eat, beach, fish, wildlife tour.

Renthal 02-15-2016 04:33 PM

Long beach lodge was pretty unreal when I stayed there.
I was ground floor walk out on the sand, but get a higher up room for better views of sunsets.
Been to ukee and tofino numerous times, and I find there is more to do and see in tofino and chesterman beach is so damn good.
