Interesting. The CbC article mention that there has already been a previous incident where the renter was kill in a crash and injured other people that wasn't cover by turo insurance.

Will see how this play out. Imo a even better way to make some extra money than uber. Especially for people with multiple cars

I think this kind of idea is all nice and cool until shit happens.

If you ever get into an accident either as the owner of renter, expect shitstorm with insurance companies.

The company is taking a cue from Uber... launch first, deal with the problem later when the fact is, they have some fundamental problems.

Bump.

Has anybody else used this when going away on vacation? Renting something like a 328i rwd, 6speed for $58/days with insurance included would beat renting an auto A4 from Silvercars for $39/day + fees for sure.

Not sure why people would want to rent out their cars for extra $$.
This reminds of the episode on Top Gear when Jeremy goes flat out in a toyota
I can just imagine that happening

Not all of us drive 6 speed manual RWD supercars. If you have a leased crossover and don't use it everyday, why not?

I'm going to give it a try when I go on a business trip to Alberta in a few weeks. I can rent a newish Hyundai accent (with 6 speed manual lol) for half the price of Hertz/Budget/etc.

In the US a lot of people running services on Turo are basically operating as a business on the site.

Similar to how some people on AirBnB has people who are snapping up entire buildings or leasing many units and renting out on AirBnB.

In essence there are some people who are leasing Escalades, Tahoe's, or 3 Series/ C-Classes, and then offering them up for rent on Turo.

At 100 bucks a day, you really only need to rent one of those high end cars out for half the month and you have already made the money back on your car. And for something like a C-Class mercedes you can undercut the average rental place by like 25%-50%.

People have found an equilibrium point at which they can Turn a service like turo into a profitable business, and many are just renting out leased cars, or cars they otherwise plan on flipping after they are done with them, so fucked if they care if someone bags on it for a couple days.

Whereas if you own your car and give any sort of shit about it, there is no fucking way you'd catch us listing our cars on Turo.

Sure. It's too bad that it isn't available in BC. I think the larger the market, the better the system works. There realistically are only ~5 car choices from the Calgary (YYC) Airport.

More like they have multiple cars and they can only drive one at a time.

Also making more money is not a bad thing.

some of these prices are okay but rb frs for 200/day is a bit much

https://turo.com/rentals/cars/ca/ven...250?s=SrwN4w0Z

a Maserati is only 150 in comparison or this Jag f-type. I guess each person puts up their own pricing instead of Turo monitoring it.

How does the car owners insurance play into all of this? Are they buying separate insurance which covers them for letting other people "rent" their cars and what happens in the case of an accident then?

So I ended up not going through with it for one reason: Insurance.

If I got insurance through Turo, even the best insurance they offer requires a $500 deductible. And the added premium makes it about the same price as a rental car at the airport.

Turo isn't a car rental company so credit card insurance doesn't cut it.

Yeah, I'm a superior driver and won't crash and this is only for two days.
Except I have crashed a rental car before (bald tires + Toyota Corolla + December in Williams Lake = bad combination), so I don't really want to risk it.

This is too bad, I wanted to give it a try.

That is what I'm debating against as well. I was looking to rent something to bring up the canyons in LA.

From your research, does the premium insurance cover both you and the other person regardless of who's fault it is?

I see a lot of people praise Turo online but it seems like they all went for the lower level of coverage or none at all. And the people who have gotten in accidents didn't seem to have a good experience.

Was in LA a few weeks ago. Rented a convertible Mustang GT. Pick up/drop off was done at a lot near LAX which was handled nicely according to my friend.

Whole process was pretty straightforward, and you get way better selection through Turo compared to a rental company, as you can see from just scrolling through the site. Plus I believe it's an actual option for people who are too young to rent from rental companies (I think you have to be at least 25 for any company..)

Lots of the nicer cars you need to be 30+ which is unfortunate. Also there is more than meets the eye with fees after the price you see. But it's not terrible and I think still ended up as a better deal compared to any other avenue.

We got like minimal coverage. Living life risky I guess.

with even the best drivers, accidents not caused by you can happen. IE, flat tire from nails, windshield chips, other people dinging/crashing into your car. Personally would love to use their service, but from the looks of it, small incidents can cost you hundreds of dollars and totally not worth it. Last thing you want is to deal with a stupid claim while on or after a vacation for something like a small scratch.

Yes, it covers both. Actually, insurance is different in the US and Canada. It looks like in Canada, you're covered regardless because it's through Intact Commercial insurance.

I might give it a try on my next work trip to Alberta...but there needs to be some more interesting cars to drive in Calgary. The selection is nowhere close to LA's.

Anyone rented on Turo yet? I'm planning to rent a GTI for $43USD/day and possibly a Corvette or like a Porsche Cayman on the last two days. How did your insurance work? Did u use the roadside plus from ICBC on top of Turo?

^ because it's not a rental company your roadside plus doesn't cover it.

While I have never priced out the endorsement for rental car coverage, I would imagine it's very expensive and would carry a very high deductible, no less than $5000.

Sounds like a great way to end up with:
- Smashed up car
- Paying out of pocket to repair vehicles and property of other parties
- Personal injury lawsuit for third parties
- Personal injury lawsuit for the operator who rented your vehicle
- Litigation as a result of subrogation

As the renter, in the event that you cause an accident, it would be reasonable to assume that both the vehicle owner and third party may pursue legal action against you for damage to property and bodily injury.

Sketchy IMO.
