So far I wiped it down and pour peppermint oil everywhere. Hope that works.

Did someone turn on the switch to activate all the mice and rats?

They are everywhere. Four dead in my shop today.

I read lavender or dryer sheets scare them away. I bought a thing you plug into the wall that has a high pitch sound to scare them away also.

Whoa~ Kind of surprised that it is happening this time of the year. Of the few times that I have run into rats in the engine bay, they all happened during the winter months when the rats are seeking refuge from the cold.

Where was the car parked? And when was the last time the car has been moved?

I have this problem once in a while. Placed a lot of rat traps near the car when parked and eventually killed the culprit. I tried all the usual suggestions like dryer sheets and raid sprays but they didn't work.

Oh and the smell of rat shit when you turn on the car heater. I totally get you.

I wouldn't poison anything...
They can just crawl up in a corner somewhere and die. You'll have to smell that for weeks.

I had this same problem when I casually opened my engine cover one day and saw a bunch of rat poop
I park in the garage now, but I thought it was strange because I have never came across this before

Can car manufacturers put some bitterant into wires and shit just to deter rat from chewing on this shit? They put bitterant into those compressed air canisters when people started huffing that shit.

Then again, rats eat and chew anything. Kinda want them to chew on a ghost pepper to see how they like it. Cue PETA

LOL does this part have Vtec? once it catches 5000 rats per minute it amps up and catches up to 9000 rats per minute.

I park on the street, its my wife's car and she's on mat leave so the car doesn't get used that often, I open the hood for the first time in awhile, and rat shit On the battery and engine cover. If nothing works then I'll have to clean the garage and park it inside. But I wanted to make the garage into a sex dungeon I mean man cave.

Nevermind rats, I used to have fricken squirrels living in the engine bay of the truck. I strapped on one of them high pitch devices onto the intake and it seems to have worked. I plugged it into a short extension cord, then had end stick out of grill, block heater style.

Peppermint oil and moth balls worked, but that shit smells and it makes its way into the cabin. I park the truck outside in the backyard driveway. Fucking varmints cost me 200 bucks in repairs.

Imma gonna strangle the fucking neighbours who feed peanuts to the squirrels.................... peanuts don't grow around here.

Personal experience. Putting out whatever product to "deter" them away doesn't really solve the issue, especially if there are a few running around.

My stupid neighbour has ton of crap in the back and a great hiding spot for these little rat/mice creatures. So my dad set up cages with some pork to lure them in and catch them/kill them. Now, I've only seen like one the entire year, when I used to see one every week.

they hate light and moving items, had the same problem recently- never had a problem before. Tried all the 'remedies' other than poison, put a trouble light under the hood and a small usb powered fan from computer desk, never came back. luckily car is parked under cover in rear of property, power line available to it. Been 3 weeks now - no issues.

If you end up parking the car in the garage, disconnect the battery and leave the hood open. As Euro7r was saying, rats love places where there is covered or has stuff that allows them to hide. When you leave the hood open, it takes away the place's sense of security, and they are less likely to stay there (in your engine bay).

Went through this issue on my previous car when I lived at home.

I read somewhere that rats are very "memory based". So, if you move and park your car over night somewhere else, they will move on and find a new home.

If your car is there constantly, then they will keep coming back.

Not sure how true this is, but if you have the opportunity to park your car somewhere else for one night, it may solve the issue?

Our whole neighbourhood has a rat problem. I drive my work van every day and there's always rat droppings under the engine when I move it. Even the dealership puts on the work orders that there is lots of droppings in the crevices of the engine compartment. I think one of these days they're going to refuse to work on it. I also get the nice smell of warm droppings every time I park and get out of the van.

I've been thinking of getting one of those motion detector lights that they sell for houses. Remove one of the light bulbs and plug in one of those high frequency devices. Leave the other bulb in place and put the thing under the van with power from an extension cord. Now if a rat comes by in range of the motion detector, the light and noise may be enough to scare it off. Anyone think it's worth a try?
