You can swap in any m.2 80mm ssd and it will work. I've swapped many of the ones at work with a 500gb one in 15min.

2D or 3D CAD? as the requirements for each is different.

Chances are you will not be getting something around that price range to run autocad.

sorry, I don't mean to steal your thread but I'm also looking for a new laptop for personal work and maybe gaming. I'll be using this majority for 3d modeling and vfx type of stuff, designs (maya, adobe applications, etc). Any recommendation? I am a student so the price should be at a minimum. Thanks

Do you have a price range you want to spend. 3d modeling uses a bit more resources than 2d modeling so price will be a bit more. Most of the time you will be paying for the videocard in the laptop than anything else.

under 1500, I don't think spending 2000 on a laptop will be necessary will it? I really like to have a lit up keyboard as well.

i usually recommend the lenovo p series for 2d and 3d
Base starts at 2k but should get you what you need for light/medium 3d work. if you don't mind down the road you can get an SSD and use the hd that comes with it as a secondary.

Usually people who ask me about modeling and drawing in 2d or 3d i would recommend desktop over laptop unless they need to travel to do their work as the price is better for a desktop over a laptop

For desktop wise, I already have.

Radeon Software Version - 16.3.2
Radeon Software Edition - Crimson
Graphics Chipset - AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series
Memory Size - 1024 MB
Memory Type - GDDR5
Core Clock - 1070 MHz
Windows Version - Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) (64 bit)
System Memory - 8 GB
CPU Type - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz

what are some components I should replace. This is a very old computer that's bought back in 2008? With after effects, I can only handle light work until it starts to lag and rendering takes up a lot of time.

Yes spending money on something that is beneficial is a good idea but If I have already have what I have and all I can do is just upgrade my parts I can save money. Like I said, I am a full time student.

If nothing hardcore, then MSI.

For the love of everything, don't get Alienware

If you were to spend that much, GET A SAGER

I upgraded my video card for my Sager recently, and it's still the one of the fastest 15.6" available

Bought it in 2012 with NVidia 680M video card, upgraded the video card last year, still runs ALL games at least on Very High performance (even crazy games like Arkham Knight)

NVidia 980M 8GB video card
32GB ram
SSD HD

Razer blade along with alienware are overpriced gaming laptops.

I have been recommended to buy a sager a lot of times before. They're famous for upgradeable GPU's.

I bought my Sager from XoticPC

Very good customer service, very good communication. Their Black Friday deals are pretty good, that's when I got my laptop

I also hear good things about XIDAX as a reseller, but I have never bought from them.

I would recommend a surface pro 4 if you have some wiggle room. They are perfect if you don't do things involve powerful graphic card like gaming or graphic designing (you should be using a desktop for these anyways).

Have 1 for work and love it.
