Nokia 2016 comeback with android

has anyone heard of the nokia 2016 comeback with android, my coworker told me about this last week and i did a bit of a search

Quote:

Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri has announced the Finnish company’s intention to return to the smartphone market in 2016. Speaking to Manager Magazin in Germany, the 47-year-old executive noted that Nokia could design the new handsets and then licence the designs and Nokia name to as yet un-named partner. Georgina Prodhan for Reuters:

“We will look for suitable partners,” Rajeev Suri said in an interview published on Thursday. “Microsoft MSFT -2.00% makes mobile phones. We would simply design them and then make the brand name available to license.”

The timing and the nature of the return of the former number one mobile phone manufacturer (…in the world) should come as no surprise to anyone paying attention to the details either the sale of Nokia’s devices and services business to Microsoft or the release last year of the Nokia N1 tablet.

Nokia’s Android-powered tablet was announced at the Slush conference in November 2014, and demonstrated Nokia’s new retail model for hardware. The design was Nokia’s own, and while it shipped with Android 5.0 Lollipop and support for Google GOOGL -1.32% Play, it was given a Finnish flavor through Nokia’s ‘Z Launcher’ software. Foxconn obtained the licence for the tablet’s manufacturing, selling, shipping, and support.

A leaner Nokia had returned to the hardware market without the tricky issue of rebuilding a support network for the hardware, and Foxconn could make use of its own manufacturing knowledge and networks to ship the N1.

While there are no details on who would be the licence of the next Nokia smartphone (or acknowledgement that Nokia will in fact release such a handset), it makes sense for Suri and Nokia to adopt the same business model for any new handset.

not too sure but did anyone else heard anything, *cough*StylinRed*cough*

Nokia sold their old wireless division to Microsoft a few years back before acquiring Alcatel this year.

Will be interesting to see what they release. The Idol 3 was a good phone for the money at the time of release. Haven't heard much about the newer Idol 4 yet.

Glad to see Nokia back in the phone market and that they are adapting Android, and not trying to enter the mobile phone OS market (i.e. Symbian / Maemo/MeeMo etc.)

I believe their N1 tablet was quite a success in Asia (limited launch) which ran Android, but was Nokia skinned.

I thought alcatel is still owned by TCL (chinese company that make shitty TV)

LOL

microsoft trojan horse screwed them so badly.

if they make an indestructible smartphone they might be onto something

ae101 04-29-2016 11:04 PM

^
indestructible smart phone? 3310 smart phone

nokia always put too much on to phone quality and not enough on OS, hope they do much better with OS

bcrdukes 04-30-2016 05:43 AM

One thing is for sure - Nokia is better at manufacturing than programming. They should have just used a third-party OS of some sort as opposed to being obsessed with pushing Symbian.

I miss Nokia hardware.

Bring back the 3390 but updated to run the latest android. Even the screen should be the same size, just updated with quad HD 2000+ ppi. Bring back week long battery life and space impact. Snake is also welcome. I would totally buy it. It could double as mjolnir if I attached it to a stick.

jeedee 04-30-2016 01:25 PM

looks like a ripoff of the Nexus 6p LOL

If Nokia can start releasing hit android phones, I'd be on board for sure.
Anyone remember Nokia's call quality and reception? I don't think I ever had a single dropped call with any Nokia phone.

Nokia 8800 - Full phone specifications

StylinRed 05-02-2016 03:48 PM

old news really, they're just selling their brand and 'co-designing' devices (approving designs from chinese firms)

nothing nokia behind it really, they got rid of all their talent too, who are now either at microsoft, or their own startups, and even different industries entirely

nothing to look forward to, unless you want some wearables? nokia just bought Withings

Mr.HappySilp 05-02-2016 05:32 PM

^^ Nokia 3310 was my fav! No matter how many times you drop it, it will always work! Not to mention snake on it was awesome!

yray 05-02-2016 08:15 PM

Both my lumia 920 and 930 had dust in camera issues but damm they are reliable and has a classic look to them.

Nokia drive and Nokia maps are ridiculously good. Used them to drive and travel all around the world and it works perfectly.

I have a Nokia Lumia 830 and 1020 right now and both are solid phones.

And yes, Nokia Drive & Maps is awesome. By far, the best phone map application in my experience.

FerrariEnzo 05-03-2016 03:30 PM

Hope they do a better job then Blackberry.. lol

Klondike 05-03-2016 07:03 PM

I'd definitely consider a Nokia branded phone (Android or WP10)

My Lumia 640XL has been more than dependable and I only have to charge it every other day. It takes really nice photos too. No snapchat app though :/

ae101 05-03-2016 07:31 PM

i just never like the fact Windows dont offer enough apps, which why i never ever picking nokia Windows again ever (learn my lesson with a cheap nokia Windows phone)

i dont think im huge on apps, but for todays modern ppl stuff like: snapchat/instagram, some sort of instant messaging app, deals app like groupons and stuff like that are a big part of ppls lifes now

i duno about now, but when i was nokia Windows, i only had wechat install and that was the only app i could use in China

godwin 05-04-2016 06:01 AM

The Alcatel brand name was licensed to TCL for cell phones. The company Nokia bought was Alcatel-Lucent.
