To Gululu:

By posting some picture of black people working in china will not reduce the inherent racism in the video ad one single bit.

the truth is that China as a country is as socially backward as it was in the 1970s after 10 years of Cultural Revolution which destroyed all the good qualities like respect, love, compassion, forbearance, forgiveness and loyalty that are central to a peaceful, civil society.

China needs to seriously examine itself if it wants to be taken seriously as a emerging superpower.

Bahhbeehhaaaa 05-28-2016 01:05 AM

Very well said, I've been working in China for 1.5 yrs and frankly speaking, there are no trust and it's hard to build true relationships here. In most cases, money bonds people together in China.

It would have made if the guy at the end looked like this:

it was covered, when it was released, whats amusing is the BBC brought up the italian commercial during their discussion of the Chinese one, and they said that the white to black one 'is actually funny' ;)

Which is worse? The connotations associated with the Chinese add are worse, as they're indicating a people are worse than another.

Both racist, one is more offensive

This just proves that everyone is a bit racist. Both should be as equally offensive. People are associating black with dirty. I can argue that white = dirty in the Italian commercial and he got "cleaned" up to be a better black dude.

It's just that almost everyone views black people as an inferior race compared to others (even themselves), which makes this ad more "racist" than others.
I don't even know why racism exists in 2016 and why people and the media blow it out of proportion. Especially when it comes to African Americans.

Did he think you made the commercial?

fun fact...darkie toothpaste has been owned by colgate for decades...changed the name to darlie and made it less obvious it's a 'black man' but the Chinese translation is still black man toothpaste.

That's because white people spend big money to look darker.

evidently you've never done your own laundry.

a washing machine gets your clothes clean (from being dirty to clean). something that goes in dark, comes out lighter, by virtue of the washing process was previously dirty (represented by the black gentleman), now clean (represented by the chinese male). that's not racism, that's how washing machines work (how it was represented in the ad was racist).

when you use a colour detergent, it helps keep your coloured clothes more vibrant in their colour. the italian advert is for a colour specific detergent, if i recall correctly (you get colour, whites, sensitive skin detergents, in europe, i don't recall getting these in north america - but it's a big thing in europe), that is, you put your coloured clothes in, wash them in the colours detergent, and they stay their vibrant colour. clothing that keeps its vibrant colour is better than faded, washed out looking clothing - the italian advert is technically right in that respects / its verbal message - "coloured is better" (in referencing coloured clothes that stay vibrantly coloured).

so, here's the flaw in the italian advert, you can't take a faded / washed out item of clothing and wash it in colour detergent and bring it back to its former coloured glory, so on this base, not only is it stupid because it has racist connotations (using the term coloured to refer to a person), it actually makes no sense.

STOP LOOKING FOR RACISM IN EVERYONE!!! what's going on in these adverts is pretty black and white (no pun)

You either make fun of everyone, or make fun of no one. If you pick and choose who to make fun of, you're just a fucking hypocrite.

ilovebacon 05-29-2016 02:49 AM

anyone notice that black guy got Hermes shoes on haha.
clearly they pay them good in china

"making fun" of something is different from the humor being based on someone being inferior because of their race [in this case the insinuation being that having dark skin means you're dirty]

Gululu 05-29-2016 04:21 AM

concept of racism is a political tool exercised by western nations. such concept do not exist nor apply to China. China didnt participated in the african slave trade, chinese never tortured black slaves, and never raped black women. Chinese do not need to comply by your rules regarding racism. The point was to make fun and no harm was intended. if some are offended then that's their own problem.

=Gululu;8759128]young Africans are joining china's shrinking manual labour force. black men working as delivery assemblers for suning.com in guangzhou, so you can see the chinese society is very accommodating to blacks. or else they wouldn't even apply for such roles

this proofs nothing, i live in guangzhou for the past 5 years & my office is quite close to xiaobei (an district where blacks hangout)

i know a few blacks and they find this a bit racist because they portrait the black guy as an lower class (which they have always been portrait as)

u dont find it racist cuz your not black, u dont know what it feels like to be looked down upon and be classified as a lower class even when your not
