interesting bit on Jacob Trouba and the Bruins apparently planning to offer sheet
if they somehow managed to get him signed under $5.4M AAV the compensation is just a first round pick and a third round pick which would be a bargain for an emerging stud dman
in comparison, Seth Jones just signed a 6 year contract at $5.4 AAV
no way Trouba is worth the same as Jones so the compensation for the offer sheet would actually be worth it

one of Staal, Backes for leadership purposes if possible
Staal is a bit of a gamble but if he could be had for a decent cap hit, i think the change in scenery might bring back his game
Backes, because...if Lucic couldn't be had, Backes is the next best thing and has better leadership qualities.

staal seems like he is done and just plays for the pay cheque, backes a lot of miles on his body and he is 32...don't mind everyone else but not a fan of helm..

i get the feeling that Canucks will strike out on all the big name FA's
and will probably have to settle for the recycle bin of FA from July 2nd onwards
i mean, as a player now i wouldn't want to sign in Van...haha
aging core, front office seem incompetent, no clear plan for the future, a meh collection of prospects, no luck, a meddling owner, fickle fans, and a huge chunk of my paycheque goes towards housing

A part of me wants the Canucks not to land anyone big and we have another shitty season so we can build our prospect pool again except knowing our luck Jim Dim will trade away all the draft picks like he did last season.

Agreed. UFAs rarely work out (especially with long contracts that extend well past their prime) for teams that aren't playoff contenders.
I rather just be patient and build through the draft.

i really only see 3 options for the offseason
do nothing and tank for patrick
get stamkos, and wait til sedins contracts run out so cap can be spent better + youth playing better +the addition of boeser and maybe juuolevi in the lineup
sign vanek and one of eriksson/lucic. then hope vanek can somehow spark a second line

after this season...i'm not even gonna hold out hope for a top 3 pick even if we tank
We have such a shitty luck with anything that even if we finish dead last in the NHL next season, we'll probably end up picking 4th overall
