Do LED Light Bulbs For The House Last 10 Years?
 

I've been thinking of switching to LED light bulbs for the house. I read on the packaging that they last for 10 years before you have to replace them. Anyone know if this is true?

For what? Interior, headlights,Taillights, license plate lights?

For the house.

yes they do and a lot of them have a 10 year warranty

I have replaced most of my lighting with LED, including the multitude of pot lights I have in the house. I will say they are great from the stand point I haven't had to replace one yet, and I've had them in for about 5 years.

Where they don't perform great is I find them to be fairly directional lighting; the incandescent lamps cast light out to the sides way better. I notice for example in our kitchen which only has pot lights that there is a dim line that splits the middle of the kitchen floor. Only I notice it, but... well, I notice it :)

I sure am not complaining about the energy savings though or having to pull my ladder out every couple weeks when one of the 18 pot lights burn out on the main floor.

yes they do, though not all of them do. I've seen some big brands burn out within 2 years depending on the environment they are used in as well. Vancouver being dry and relatively cool is ideal for the lights to last

LEDS have come a long way, as there are more and more mood lighting, and much more warmer colors to light up a home or whatever compared to a few years ago.

I have had only 1 led bulb (pack from Costco) go bad on me (started flickering and running hot)

Have a couple of cree 60w equivalent and philips 40w equivalent bulbs.
I've had them for about 4-5 years now with about 4-6 hours use per day.
All of them still work.

I bought some for my tenants 5 years ago and got them some spares for replacement, never had to change them yet.

Yes, they're more expensive but they almost never have to be changed and you save on electricity. Just don't buy cheap ones, they'll be the wrong colour tone, burn hotter, flicker... etc

I don't recommend the ones from night market, it's been a year or so and they flicker sometimes.

Stick with big name LED bulbs and you are good.

There are differnet gen of LED lights, if i remember correctly:

Gen 3: The most common design today is what they call "COB" LED, it is thin, less heat, more reliable.

New Gen: The lastest design should be retro styling LED, you can google it. I have all my house lights replaced with this.

I have these Phillips retrostyle LED...they are 7w (4 led strips) = 100w halogen, the 4.3w (2 led strips inside) = 50w
The 7w is around CAD7 in China.

Consumer reports in Asia have been testing a lot of LED products these few years, they measured the brightness vs longevity of the current LED light products in the market. Not all big brands offer the brightest and more long lasting. Take Philips for example, it is not the brightness, but very long lasting among other brands. LED nowaday has very good angle, it really depends on the internal design.

I've just replaced most of my house lights with led bulbs. I personally think they are extremely better than CFL.

i'm a fan of led though -- been using led flashlights for a decade, led strips, etc ... and none of them have ever been faulty. Made the switch to bulbs now and not regretting it at all.

side note, I've also bought those led tubes that look like halogens for the basement workbench area, and it's phenomenal.

I replaced about 30 bulbs so far but went with IKEA stuff.

2pk 5W/40W for$3.99 OR 2pk 7.5W/60W for $6.49.

quality seems great and lighting is awesome. i still need to replace more... but for the ikea price its pretty good.

I think however clean your house power is might affect the life of your LEDs?
I presume issues such as power flickers, brown outs or spikes will affect their durability?

Does anybody have any experience with this?

Bear in mind that unless your existing incandescent bulbs are in need of replacement (ie. they've burnt out), it doesn't really make any economic sense to replace them with LED bulbs just because. But in a multi-bulb setting, obviously it would make sense to replace all incandescent bulbs with LEDs if one of the incandescents burnt out.

i really need to replace the CFL bulbs in my room with LED. i honestly cant stand CFL..

what are some of the better brands?

^ I've gone with Philips from Home Depot (when they're on sale) and the Sunbeams from Costco and so far I've had no issues with them. They're roughly 3 years old now

there was one bulb from the 3 pack Sunbeam one that started flickering after a few months but was able to return to Costco.

When I did my research a year or two ago, I came to the conclusion that Cree is one of the top brands in the LED game. A lot of the "filaments" (is that what they are called?) is made by Cree in the first place, and they seem to do a fair bit of LED development as well. Their bulbs are also slightly more efficient (in terms of energy usage vs lumens output) than the Philips bulbs.

Where are you guys getting yours from besides the obvious Costco and Home Depot?

I've used some china garbage and they are hit and miss. I would say 60% of them have burnt out already within 1-2 years. Need to start finding a more reliable brand.

^ it doesn't answer your question, but I've had very good success with the Costco MR16s. Company is local (Luminus), and the light is only slightly whiter and slightly narrower than the outgoing 50W bulbs. Output is slightly less, but in my particular application they were fine (9 potlight kitchen). 10 year warranty as well. They were 35W equivalents, in case you were wondering.

I have some CREE bulbs, 2/10 failed on me (1 after a year+, and the other after 6 months), just have to bring them into home depot and they'll replace them, 10yr warranty on the CREEs (although their newer line only offers 5yrs iirc and are Made in Mexico instead of USA)

Maybe the newer ones aren't as good then... I have 10 or so around the house for various use (including 4 in the washroom where they get turned on an off a lot, and is subjected to moisture on a regular basis). They've been in service for ~2 years, and none have failed on me yet. They were also of the 10 year warranty variety, and IIRC, were made in the US.

Even if they do not last a full duration of 10 years, they are inexpensive to replace

Sun beam has good review in asia, if the LED flicks, it should be the driver underpowering the LEDs. If the driver is integrated, then the bulb can go into the trash can.

Make sure ur LED has good cooling heatsink, hot LEDs will have short life
