Wifi AC Extender, 2.4 or 5 ghz or both?

I just upgraded my old N router to Asus AC router and added a Xiaomi AC router to be a extender (repeater), when I check the Asus router "connected device", the extender only shows connected in 2.4ghz mode, is it normal?

Also if you are living in HK 5Ghz often doesn't penetrate through concrete and can only go much shorter distances.

Best use a wifi analyizer app to see how strong your router signals are and make sure they overlap.

Let me get this straight, a phone can only connect to one band, either 2.4 or 5ghz

An extender suppose can connect to both bands simultaneously?
