Yes, I would highly recommend lithium ion batteries as well. I used to have NiCAD, and every year (sometimes couple of years), I would have to replace them. Lithium batteries have been good for me so far.

I have one of these, more useful than a impact IMO. I use it to take bolts off in the engine bay (ie: valve cover, blow off valve, intercooler t-clamps, battery tie downs, under tray bolts for oil change, etc)

I have a corded impact which I rarely use unless I'm doing some suspension work.

For wheels, I do 3 cars twice a year, I just use a breaker bar to break loose the nuts and this tool can spin the lugs off and on, use the breaker to tighten and torque wrench.
I would love to get a nice Milwaukee 18V impact, but I don't think I would use it enough to justify the cost.

Home Depot does not carry the item, so no matching is possible.

As mentioned by another member, it's not worth the 500 bucks. At 400 bucks, it's a deal. The tool is amazing and you'd be the envy of those who go to the track.

You might want to check out the Milwaukee Service Centre right by Byrne Road.

MILWAUKEE ELECTRIC TOOL (CANADA) LTD
9000 BILL FOX WAY, UNIT A103 BURNABY, BC V5J 5J3 CANADA

They carry refurb and new tools. It's the candy store for all things Milwaukee. Nothing but Milwaukee. Wall to wall, floor to ceiling. A must see store, but not to buy as prices are, meh.

Good point about the battery. I want to invest in one but I don't work on the car all the time. Sometimes I go weeks without touching it Han sometimes I spent a week wrenching on it everyday. Want something that has enough torque to break apart axle nuts, do suspension work.

Should I go for a cord one instead? Are they usually better than cordless and cheaper? I have access to enough power cable to wrap around the world at work so that not really a problem.

If you keep the battery topped up on a lithium ion you won't have any issues. I go months at a time without using/charging and the battery is still strong after 4 years.

Also, you already bought everything ryobi, just buy everything milwaukee/dewalt/bosch/makita from now on depending on what brand of impact you're buying lol

I never used any of the better brands like Milwaukee or Makita, but I can tell you Ryobi cordless is no good for breaking lug nuts.

I bought a Ryobi impact driver from Home Depot, rated at 1500 inch lbs. of torque, (125 ft), and it wasn't able to break loose my lug nuts. I was looking for something inexpensive and simple to use, specifically just for lug nuts, and it wasn't able to get the job done. My car lugs are torqued at 95.

I can imagine the corded ones offering a lot more power, or maybe the expensive $300-500 cordless ones that would offer enough power, but it's probably more than what you need.

I still break loose my lugs with a breaker bar, and just use my drill to remove the lugs.

Even the Milwaukee rated at 750 ftlbs supposedly only gets ~250 useable torque

The max torque ratings for that 125ftlb ryobi are under no-load which means it needs to be spinning freely already... which in the case of torqued lug-nuts is completely useless.

Yeah, I figured that much after using it. It's like whp vs bhp. It's never as powerful as it says on the box.

Unless you're spending a few hundred on a good drill with high torque rating, those $50-100 ones are not going to be useful for anything other than being used like a regular power drill.

Ive heard good things about this 1/2" drive cordless impact gun. Its what i would get over the other brands as i think IR is more geared towards automotive jobs.

My wife picked me up the Canadian tire $60 corded impact last night. I used it today to swap wheels. Works great!
