recommendation for garage door spring repair (burnaby/new west)

One of the two garage door spring snapped today on my way to work. I looked on google and general conenses was to get it done by a professional as it could be a dangerous thing to be DIYing.

Anyone have a source i could contact and roughly how much does it cost? Should i replace both springs while im at it?

I had these guys come out to fix the spring. You can do it yourself, but need to be very careful. One wrong move and you can lose some teeth or worse.

Overhead Door Co. of Vancouver

It was quick and painless. I rarely use the other door, but if you use the other one just as much, then do it. Otherwise you'll have to pay them to come out again to fix door number two.

BTW, make sure to securely lock the garage door until it gets fixed.

+1 for Casp. They're mobile, reliable and professional.

I did my own garage door springs, it's not that difficult but the biggie is make sure you get the good spring unwound first. It can be very dangerous, one of my contractor friends told me that his customer decided to save a few bucks was going to unwind the spring himself and replace it. Didn't hear from him for a couple of days so he dropped by and found the guy was still in the hospital with a broken jaw and other problems.

If you get someone to do it, make sure to tell him what colour the splash of paint on the spring is. That's how they identify which spring they will need to bring with them.

Had mine done by Casp in April. I've got a 1 large door with 2 Springs and tho only 1 spring broke they recommended replacing both. $190 all in which was cheaper than others I spoke to

I'd do both. If one failed, the other isn't far behind.

Thanks guys for the help. I ended up using Casp, well more like one of Casp's outside connection cause they were busy for the week.

Ended up 200 total to replaced two springs if anyone wants a price comparison.
A lot of the other shops I called were asking 280+ for the same job.

Good to hear. They've always done right by me.

While we're on the topic of garage doors, I'm hoping to have them install this soon:

So many cool features and super quiet.

Did you ever check out the Liftmaster jackshaft openers? The only sound they make is the hum of the motor and the door moving. Plus you save overhead space. I have this setup myself (Liftmaster 3800).

not my vid but comparison

I did watch a bunch of videos of the jackshaft system. It's a great alternative for height restrictions and roll-up doors. With the conventional motor, it would sit at the same height as my door, when open and be easier to install, so I'm just going that route.

When I get a proper garage, hopefully in the near future, I definitely want to go roll-up and jackshaft. Another thing that probably helps keep it quiet in other parts of the house, is that it's bolted to a more rigid part of the house, not in the middle of the ceiling.

How are you liking it? Have you used the remote app yet? One of the vids showed that you could hook up exterior lights to the system and control them through the app as well.

I got my jackshaft Liftmaster 3800 a couple years ago before Liftmaster came out with their internet MyQ system. It has been replaced now with the 8500 with MyQ enabled. Most of their better openers now are MyQ enabled.

I did get a retrofit MyQ system for mine and it's great. It will tell me if the door has been left opened anywhere I have internet access via smartphone. It will also double as a door opener too via smartphone but I only use that if I'm walking and don't have my clicker. If I'm driving, I still like the clicker.

I saw that lighting control too but it doesn't really interest me now.
