Refunding Taxes After Cancelling A Car Import

So in 2012 I briefly considered moving back to Vancouver from Las Vegas, and started the official import process for my car (got my export stamp from the US border, started the RIV process, paid my taxes, etc).

I had a bunch of steps required to return the car to stock and never completed inspection. A few months later I changed my mind and returned to the USA for another couple of years, and later sold the car there.

I was just looking through my files and found my receipt for the HST(?) I paid that day, it was close to $4k and it would be nice to see if I could get that back. Anyone have any experience with this before I throw myself into government phone hell?

I mean, you SHOULD be able to get it back... But getting money from the government is never fun so I wish you luck my friend.

Hopefully you have lots of paperwork and documentation to back yourself up

If you have all supporting documentation, for $4k, it's worth a question to the government.

Dude fuzebox... Long time no see!

Should give RIV a call, they're a private company basically so they should be more helpful than dealing with the government I'm sure they've seen this happen before.

The first thing you are going to need is solid proof that the vehicle went back to the US and when. Hopefully you have a stamp of some sort showing it was re-imported.

RIV does not collect or administer HST - the CRA does. I would start your reading here:
D6-2-6 Memorandum - Refund of Duties and Taxes on Non-commercial Importations

To go any CBSA office and request an 'Informal adjustment form'. You will also need the original receipt CBSA issued you and explain your situation.

There's a one year time limit to request a refund. Are you outside the limit?

That's what the CBSA pages seem to say. This transaction was made 4 years ago, so I guess I'm shit out of luck.
