A Victoria-area cyclist was apparently not pleased about getting a ticket for allegedly flying through a school zone on Wednesday morning, but police say the law applies to everyone on wheels.

The cyclist was caught in one of six speed traps set up by Saanich Police Wednesday morning.

"We were stopping motorists, but we couldn't help but notice cyclists coming through our speed zones were in excess of the speed limit," said Sgt. John Price.

One of those cyclists was flagged down and received a ticket, Price said, adding that it did come as a surprise to the rider of the bike.

Price shared a warning on social media to all cyclists to watch their speed after nabbing the free-wheeler.

"The rules apply equally to a cyclist as they do to a driver of a vehicle," he said.

"Are there conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians? Yes there are. We have gone to those crashes."

Police did not say how much the cyclist was fined or how fast the person was going, but speeding in a school zone can cost as much as $483.

I'm a bit confused by this.

Does speeding or MVA(Motor Vehicle Act) apply to bicycle as well?
Does cyclist need to know the traffic law? If so, why are they allowed to ride without a license?

Police have periodically issued tickets to cyclists around Stanley Park area for years, this is nothing new.

twitchyzero 09-07-2016 11:30 PM

not every cyclist will carry ID unlike a motorist in a car/motorcycle or commuter on transit
how would they write the ticket up then? honour system?

For what? Speeding?

unit 09-08-2016 07:25 AM

^seawall is like 15kph, and has tons of walking traffic. if you want to ride stanley park faster you take the roads.

IMASA 09-08-2016 07:26 AM

I believe cyclists and roller bladers have been ticketed for speeding on the seawall.

Reeyal 09-08-2016 07:40 AM

I feel like this is going to turn into a double standard thread, cars vs bicycles... :suspicious:

pastarocket 09-08-2016 07:42 AM

What about the police issuing tickets for other traffic violations committed by cyclists? Heck, I've seen hipsters ride their bicycles right through stop signs without stopping numerous times in the south Main area of Vancouver.

One cyclist almost hit my car as she went straight through a stop sign as if that sign did not exist.

N8 09-08-2016 09:02 AM

I've gotten a ticket during one of their helmet sting operations. Never have I seen a cyclist get pulled over for an actual road violation

20psi 09-08-2016 09:11 AM

Hahaha it's about damn time!

Berzerker 09-08-2016 10:33 AM

If you ride a bike you should be aware that you are bound by the rules of automobiles and motorcycles. I have seen bikes getting failure to stop tickets here in Smithers at a popular 4 way stop by a school. This came after multiple complaints as the road is also a 30km road for the entire length (end to end in smithers) and is a dedicated bike road as well.

Berz out.

unit 09-08-2016 10:42 AM

let's be honest, 30kph is not an easy speed to maintain on a bicycle unless you're going downhill.. speeding cyclists on flat roads might be like 40 if he's really giving it... still nothing to sound the alarms about. i'm much more concerned about a speeding car than a speeding bike.

Berzerker 09-08-2016 10:47 AM

30km/hr isn't really all that hard on a road bike is it?

Edit: Searched and maintaining 30 on flat ground is pretty tough. Average commuters ride about 25.

Berz out.

cyclists are like feminism
they want all the privilegse but none of the responsibilities and inconveniences

This happens more often than not whether it's a cyclist, pedestrian, driver etc.

There's a number of ways to satisfy identity, such as descriptors/tattoos/scars/marks on police systems, previous police encounters, or if they've ever had a driver's license, asking them what their "keyword" is, and previous/current addresses.

I would say a good 90% of the peeps I deal with don't have ID.

I think it was downhill.
Look at the article, it says "School Zone on Glanford Ave"

I just Googled it, and there's a school called Glanford Middle School.
If you see the Glanford Avenue, it is in fact, going downhill.

https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Gla...!4d-123.391779

I also looked at how fast bicycles can go.

Apparently, road bike racers from "Tour De France" can go 40mph(64km/h) on flat surface and 60mph(96km/h) on downhill.

Wouldn't it be funny if they get search and taken to the police station to identity them.

underscore 09-08-2016 01:50 PM

Good, I'm tired of seeing so many cyclists breaking laws and getting away with it.

68style 09-08-2016 03:10 PM

Easy to stop a speeding cyclist too, good old clothesline to the throat takes care of everything :troll:

underscore 09-08-2016 03:30 PM

Clothesline? Just toss a stick between the spokes.

By that same logic, a Smart car should be able to go faster than a Silverado truck because the truck will cause more damage at the same speed ...
