Parking in a heated garage when your car is caked in salt is worse than parking outside.

This. My dad's 2003 CR-V has always been parked outside and daily driven, even in snow/salt. He washes the car at the Royal Oak wash place every 2 weeks when they salt the roads, the high-pressure rinse works really well on the underbody. To this day the bottom of his car looks nearly new.

OP: On a newer car you don't have to worry, just wash the car more often than normal. Make sure to be extra thorough with the fender wells and undercarriage.

Ever since then I've been buying a daily/beater to boot around every winter

My weapon against corroded coilovers....coilover socks is a thing!!!!

This is what sold me, a guy from the FR-S forums ran the covers in the front and didn't in the rear for a full winter season. You can tell the covers did their job.

trollguy 12-09-2016 08:04 AM

cheap coilovers are also a thing!

Urrtoast 12-09-2016 10:42 AM

So is having a beater winter car.... lol

underscore 12-09-2016 11:36 AM

And stock suspension. Or just normal lowering springs. Aren't those Stance coils pretty cheap anyways?

extracrunchie 12-09-2016 11:40 AM

^^^Ya I think stance coils are on the lower end, but a $30 cover can save you some headaches with rusted threads. Why not?

Hey op, roads are definitely salted now

I got some cheap kumho snow tires on the frs now. Man rwd LSD with snow tire is a hooligan in the snow. this car is super compose and controllable in the snow.

I guess I just have to keep taking it to touchless car wash to prevent the rust and corrosion? Do you have any suspension mods or exhaust mods on your frs? How is that holding up in the salt?

snowball 12-09-2016 11:02 PM

can confirm, I am salted.

Which one do you prefer or are they about the same?

Do you know if Shine Auto Wash(Royal Oak or Main St) is touchless as well?

I love the new(ish) Mobil 1 wash in Richmond on Bridgeport and No.5, always does a great job. It's not a Laser Wash, forgot the name of it, but it's the equivalent. Great touchless wash.

threezero 12-10-2016 11:58 AM

There is also washworld at no4 think it's like $23 for a full wash with their shitty wax and undercarriage wash. Notice the husky one has rust protection that other don't have or didn't advertise

Tr1ll 12-10-2016 12:32 PM

"Rust protection" from a car wash...? I suppose spraying off salt counts.

Don't buy into the marketing.

hk20000 12-13-2016 10:07 PM

-9 today I'm glad the salt is still out there

They have a touchless wash which is, in my opinion equal or better than the Laserwash 360. It's made by Saber, one of those fancy new LED multi-arm systems. I do believe the water pressure is much higher than the Laserwash systems most other touchless wash places have.

Has a super high pressure wheel/lower body spray on both sides together with a super high pressure underbody spray when first driving in, and I think the timer is set for 40 seconds iirc so you can spray every bit of your underbody very well.

Iirc it's $13/15/17? Pretty sure all tiers have the underbody spray but the mid-tier and up has the wheel and lower body spray added. $17 gets you triple down, RainX and double rinse or double high pressure soak and extended drying I think.

It's still incredibly new and clean cause not many people know they have a car wash there, they don't exactly advertise it :derp:

It depends how long you leave the car out for. Just because it is freezing doesn't mean corrosion is not happening. In fact you are packing a lot more moisture in this climate with all the snow and gunk.

Assuming most heated garages would have a much lower ambient humidity, basically the snow will fall off and your drive off, things dries and stopping the electrolytic reaction. My thermostat tells me my garage is about 40% vs 80%+ outside.

You leave it outside, the electrolytic reactions will still go on and you have temperature variations to deal with.

For overnight ie say 8+ hours.. keep it indoors.

A simple comparison, take any metal tools eg screwdriver etc. one leave outside, one you take in and out day in and day out.. you will see a difference.
