seems like some the guys here that say its ok to drive your nice car during the winter are the guys that dont work on their cars. Im sure they havent come across seized bolts or even bolt heads that have become round because of rust. I used to have a wrx and drove that thing everywhere. Drove it up to cypress numerous times. I had it for a while and just seeing the difference of the underbody when i got it compared to before I sold it is huge. Salt is aggressive on cars and its components. A 30 min job to replace something could turn into a 3 hour headache due to rust. I guess none of that matters if you pay someone else to do the work on your car anyways.

And that's understandable, it's a luxury to have somewhere you can store your car safely, and be able to afford another car just for when you don't want to drive your pleasure car.

Since the winter "beater" I got actually turn into my new project car and Instead of driving it this winter I took it apart for the winter lol. I'm force to drive my summer ride this year on winter tires.

I do work on my own cars and i know all about the headache of rust and seized bolts. If I ran the car thru touchless car wash everyweek will that make a big difference? And no washing the undercarriage out everyday is not going to happen....

I ran my FRS through touchless car washes every week or 2 last winter and the under carriage nozzles did a pretty good job cleaning up all the salt and what not

I daily my E38, idgaf. They made over 16k of them, when it rusts I'll just get another one.

Unless your car is super rare, just drive it.

I work on all of my cars, regardless of if it's my winter beater or summer car. If you take care of your car properly during winter, it wont be any different working underneath than a summer only car.

I only use car wash if I am back from driving on the Coq. I don't see much of a point using it other wise.

You want your car to last? Keep it in a garage. Extreme temperature fluctuations cause more problems with different materials expanding / contracting at different rates than anything. How do you think "recyclable" plastic know when to break down?

Oh one tip, spend time, applying some silicone grease to your door seals, and also the mating surfaces.

Though have to say, my BMW shoe hasn't been started for over a year. I used to drive that around the year.

While the temps are still freezing the salt won't do a whole lot in terms of corrosion. Make sure you wash it off when the temps start heating up again.

Parking in a heated garage when your car is caked in salt is worse than parking outside.

I used to do all that. Did it for 10 years then one day, I just had enough... went out and bought a new car with warranty the same day. Also on that day, I realized a car is not something to be proud of, it does not define who I am. It's a tool that gets me from A to B and I need it to be comfy, reliable and quick. When it's no longer one of these three things, I get another tool.

Why worry about our childrens children, when there are people in this world today who are starving and dying. If you live your life in constant agony over the future, and suffering, you are going to have a sad life.

You my friend, just skipped from being a member of the car enthusiast community to being just some other random person on the street. You just moved from being the 1% who cares and enjoys car, to being part of the 99% who don't care. Have fun!

Yup, having lots of fun... being able to drive it and have it do 0-60 in 5 seconds all day, every day... that's fun. Stressing about how I'll get to work the next day because the alternator died again... not fun... Priorities change, a car isn't something you should be worried about.

So what you bought was an appliance?

Jokes aside, there's definitely some validity in your comment. For some people its just a phase like skateboarding in their teens to photography to cars to home ownership and decking out your crib in the latest from Urban Barn. I felt the same way about photography lol used to enjoy it until it got annoying and moved on to other interests.

One of these days when I'm older I'm going to own a real piece of shit car. I'm going to park in the closest parking spots even if my car barely fits and I'm not going to give a fuck if someone dings or scratches it.

It's going to be glorious.

Absolutely, although my post had a little bit of a ribbing tone, I was only kidding around. As AK pointed out, people fall in and out of hobbies all the time. NBD.

I can't imagine those who have to live with having a project car as their only means of transportation. There's something to be said for having a solid means of transportation (a tool as you say), and then of course having a show car, track car, or other vehicle as a toy to play with on the side.

You're right, when you get into your car to go to work in the morning, it needs to just work, and it needs to be able to do the things a normal car can do, AKA get into parking lots, and over speed bumps, be semi comfortable, suit your lifestyle, etc.

why not now? LOL i'm sure any beater can be had for ~$500, assuming insurance for winter months will run $300-$400 so ~$800 all in...might even save money on gas depending on what car you'll be sitting.

more or less the same cost as buying a brand new set of winter tires

i might actually consider that when my winters need replacing

Yes

For the price of an alternator, I can buy a lot of dandelion and cremini. Yup, weed and mushrooms can take me to places no car ever can.

Welcome to owning an offroader. When I had my YJ I didn't give a shit what people did to it as I'd already done much worse myself.
