I think the "hate" stems from disappointment about how this is going to pan out. I'd love to see an alternative method of getting between Vancouver to Victoria and see this actually succeed, but it's morbidly unlikely. A lot will hinge on how enjoyable the experience is. I've taken seaplanes to/from Victoria numerous times and while convenient and easy, it is not enjoyable - loud, noisy, abrasive, worse than sitting in middle row in between to two overweight passengers. Mercifully it's short. If I have the time I actually prefer boarding the ferry with a car for basically the same cost.
This isn't for the guy who's already on a car and who isn't in downtown (that scenario/use case doesn't make sense at all). It's for someone who's already in downtown, isn't under time-sensitivity and would prefer a more leisurely ride to Victoria. But seas are choppy and much will hinge on how that boat looks after reconstruction

The ferry is boring AF. If I am taking a car over I just stay in the car and watch a movie or something on a laptop. Sometimes I go to the arcade but most of the games are usually broken.

What are they going to do force me out of the car?
Also I find it ridiculous that they have drug sniffing dogs at the Departure bay terminal for some sailings but have nothing at the Duke point terminal.

It's not a complete ban, just the lower level: Quote:
Under the ban, passengers would be forced from bottom decks while the ferry is crossing.
Those parked in upper car decks or using enclosed pet-friendly areas will be permitted to stay.

Kids running around everywhere. People taking up multiple seats so no one sits beside them. It goes on. I typically like to just sit in the car and watch a movie, but I typically only go to the Sunshine Coast, so the ride is very short, which doesn't really bother me.
I feel like the no smoking issue will be the bigger problem than the no sitting in your car. I mean, you're on a boat moving at speeds so the wind is just going to blow that smoke up and away anyways.

I can think of a long list of people who, with good reason, wish to remain in their vehicles. The upper deck is not an option for everyone like Commercial drivers who use that time to sleep. The pet area is little more than a janitor's closet. My family always come away with a cold or bug from spending time on the passenger deck, especially in the kids play area. The elevators are always being used by people too lazy to walk up two decks, when they work of course.
How long before BC Ferries charges a premium to reserve a spot on the upper car deck?
They are also talking about a complete ban on smoking on the Ferries. I don't smoke but I had no issue with the current system.

What a load of shit. I only use the Ferry a few times a year but when I do I stay in my car because all the seats are taken by walk ons by the time you get up there anyways. Like stated above you can't choose which deck you're on so it's a roll of the dice whether you're chilling in your car watching a movie or standing upstairs with the rest of the unlucky bottom deckers? I thought the ferry sucked before but this tops it

Yeah this fucking SUCKS.
What pisses me off is that "International regulations" influence Transport Canada's implementation of this bullshit.
"International regulations" changed when some ferry in Estonia sank in 1994 when its bow visor broke off in super rough seas and water entered the vehicle deck.
Thing is, they're comparing a ferry that sailed between Estonia(Tallinn) and Sweden (Stockholm) some 200 fucking kilometers across the open Baltic sea (14 hour sailing) to our 50km sailing through the Straight of Georgia.
The Sea Conditions will NEVER get that bad on this side. We don't even get fucking ocean swells east of Sooke.
When you have used the ferry as much as I have over the years it becomes a utility.
For quite a while now if I drive on the only thing I go upstairs for is food otherwise hang out in the car. Recline my seat, put on some tunes or watch some TV on my laptop makes the hour and a half go by quick and comfortable. I do NOT want to be fighting for seats upstairs with the walk on plebs.
To answer your question Manic: Quote:
What are they going to do force me out of the car?
| I'm guessing this would be treated no differently than if you didn't comply with Crew instruction on an airplane... You'll have a police officer waiting for you on the other side.

I don't mind the upper passenger areas, they haven't been too busy even when the ferry is full the last few times I've gone, and at least you can't hear car alarms up there. Most people don't seem to know you have to lock the door manually with the key to avoid setting the alarm. With my in laws Rav you have to hit the lock button on the door, then close the drivers door, then lock the drivers door with the key.

My god, why can't we just leave things alone? Why do we feel we require constant change = good?
Fuck BC Ferries, I will continue to sit in my car. What a stupid decision.

When I read about the transit time, I thought this was what they would be using
Since how could this crossing take so long? In that time I'd be broke.

Since how could this crossing take so long?. | It's 150+ kilometres to go Downtown Van to Downtown Vic, and those catamaran ferries only do about 30 knots (~50km/h)

Their website is not bad.
However, they don't prominently show exactly what type of "luxuries" are provided.
What are the differentiators?
I know, from their words, that it's "luxury" but... what are they offering in terms of "luxury" features?
I had to go to the FAQ section and some other section and actively DIG for the details.
It should be on the front page or the landing pages.
Bad website and marketing team.

| what a joke
it arrives in Victoria at 11:30am and departs at 2:00pm. so you have 2 hours to have lunch and then hop back on the boat?? Unless you're staying the night, who the hell is going to use this? But if you're staying the night and already willing to pay between $120-$240 EACH WAY, why wouldn't you just fly Harbour Air or Helijet and save yourself 3 hours each way. |

Yeah. Took my son to take helijet last year to Vic. I think it was sub-400 RT?And it was a 30min ride each way. It was free for my son too!
That Royal class better come with caviar, champagne, and Michelin-starred meal because I don't see how else this is making sense.
