three sets of pentatonic notes, so not all notes can be played (bagpipes are not a chromatic instrument), which gives it that extra mystical sound. Some players can bend it like Beckham to get a few sharps that weren't in the design. They stink, that's for sure. For the longest of time, I hated the sound, but over time, it grew on me to the point I now love it.

I attended my daughter's graduation at SFU where they came marching down those steps during the opening ceremonies. Damn, it was awesome. Thank you, Arthur Erickson, for such a beautiful building. I guess they perform every year at the grad ceremonies? My son graduated from SFU, but didn't attend the ceremonies.

Damn, so many musicians on RS. Who would've thunk?
As for any recording, you cannot beat live performances. Just not possible to recreate sound through any means. But, recordings are the only thing that most people can experience. Unless you're like Hondaracer who takes in musicals and performances around the globe.

You still play? I bet you have a Bach Stradivarius. I was a Getzen, Doc Severinson, large bore Eterna man myself. Even owned a Benge Flugelhorn. Man, that horn was my baby. I made love to it, as one of my colleagues once said to me. I was the Asian brother of Chuck Mangione. Yeah, too much information, gulolol. In college, I was the high note specialist. Double high C’s on a good day. Then life happened. Sold my Flugelhorn and passed the Eterna down to my daughter. Haven’t played in, in, in............. 30 years? Were you ever in the New West Band or Beefeaters (maybe before your time)?

No, I never made it to Bach Strad level, although I do have and Olds Ambassador (nothing special) and a Holton Symphony T101, which is somewhat of a copy cat of a Strad. Holton bought the old tooling from Bach and ended up making some minor changes to it, but plays similar, and sounds smiliar to a Strad, but realistically, nothing like a Strad - Trained ears can hear the difference. I got it for very cheap from an estate sale (IIRC, $200 USD) but it needed a bit of work to get back into a good playing condition. Heidi Choo at Long & McQuade (Northwest Music OG) fixed it up for me.
I didn't play after my parents discouraged me from going in to music, despite being accepted in to UBC Music. Martin Barrinbaum was furious lol. Also, at that point, i realized it wasn't what I wanted to do, so I never pursued it, other than to play music for pleasure. I don't think i've played since maybe 2014/2015.
Edit: No, I never played with the Westies, although i did fill in for a few players once or twice. I'm not familiar with the Beef Eaters, so probably before my time. Other than that, I played with the BCRs for a solid 6 or 7 years, and played casually with Victor Guy's community band in North Van in 2013 to 2014.
Edit #2: Nice horn - i really enjoyed playing on the Doc Severinson series Getzens, but was never able to find any for sale when I was looking. I grew up playing student-level horns throughout elementary and high school (Yamaha and Jupiter, sadly) and when I did honour band with Martin Barrinbaum at UBC, he hated it, and always gave my band teacher a hard time about giving us junk horns. I think one of the things Martin didn't know was the income disparity and social situation compared to 99% of his students, but I could be wrong.

Oh, it was rough going to UBC with a less than desirable instrument. I think I had a King trumpet. My mom scrimped and saved to buy me that in high school. She saw I had musical talent and made it her goal to support me in every way possible. I remember UBC days. Going to parties and not fitting in. I kept my background a secret. I was ashamed of it. But, I survived. I learned that it doesn't matter where you come from. I did die a little each time the others talked about going to fancy places and shit - the things they experienced, etc. I had nothing to contribute. In the end, it made me stronger. My playing did the talking.
North Van community band with Victor Guy. Damn. You're so young. My band instructor at China High was Harold King. He was like the John Philip Sousa of Canada. At least that was how I saw him. He must be dead by now. He was like 100 when he was the band teacher. Did I tell you about professor Theo Goldberg? He was the music teacher at Strathcona. Man, he inspired me. He was the reason I got into music, aside from the marching band. When I went to UBC, I was blown away. He was a prof at UBC. Music Ed, iirc. I visited him a few times to talk about his days at Strath. Damn, that guy was pure gold. Actually, most of the teachers at Strath were exceptional.
Yamaha student trumpets were the best. That case, lol. I still have the used one I bought for my youngest son when he was in secondary school.
My playing was mainly gigs around town. Never joined the union, so I was limited to gigs like amateur musical productions at theatres like the Metro Theatre, Theatre under the Stars, helping out friends by playing in the pits at secondary school productions. I was also an adjudicator at some music festivals, played in big band/dance ensembles, conducted a few stage bands, etc. I miss those days. Musicals in particular. Tight little hotties running around with barely nothing on. At least at the Metro. Hot Jazz Club. Were you around when that place was hoppin'? Didn't matter if you were blind or not, lol. Couldn't see jack shit. I just looked it up. They were in operation till 2004? What the hell. I thought that placed died way before that.
Have you ever gone buskers? Granville Street, when it was still a street, lol.
At UBC, I was at a crossroads, do I pursue a career in music, or do something else? I was a perfectionist and my playing was never good enough in my eyes. Friends thought I could make it, but I couldn't make the commitment. A lot of what if's.......................
I'm tired. Need to take a seniors nap, gulolol.

RS dead, so........bump. I drove by the secondary school in North Burnaby on the way to Shoppers Drug mart at Kensington Square. The one with the scary viking at the entrance. I noticed a bunch of people in uniforms from far away. As I got closer, it was a matching band. WTF? Here in the Lower Mainland??? I wAnder how many other high schools around here have marching bands.
