I want a convertible.

I have the battery tender on my 5.0 Mustang right now and don't see myself driving it for some time to come with this weather. But suddenly I'm fantasizing about a convertible. I've never really entertained getting a drop-top over a hard top. Mostly because it seems like in Vancouver it'd be up most of the time and it'd be a compromise the rest of the time. Also the fact that I know a lot of convertible owners who have had theirs slashed. People are real assholes.

Impractical in a city like Vancouver, sure. But just having a CAR tends to be.

I can dream.

Something like this would be a lot of fun

Everyone one will agree, get a car that was designed to be a convertible in the first place. Don't buy a car that they later offered in a vert. It will be heavier, floppier and have worse resale.

Miatas, z4's etc etc were designed as verts. But the BMW e30 vert was not. Drive both and you'll know what I mean

Having owned two Miatas I'd say that owning a convertible is a blast when it's not raining - unless temperatures are below 7-8 degrees I'd normally put the top down (easier with my NC than my current NB since the NC had great heated seats).

When I was in Maui I rented a Mustang convertible and it was awesome - in a climate like that it's pretty amazing.

That said, owning a convertible is a compromise - visibility is just awful and you give up a lot of space (tiny rear seats or none at all, smaller trunk). For me, the joy of driving a Miata is only very slightly outweighed by the PITA it is as a regular car.

In this day and age of shared platforms. It is extremely hard to find modern convertible models ie 00+ on that are not designed with it in mind during the design process..

If you're buying used make sure to get the top inspected by a shop that specializes in installing them. FYI brand new Camaro convertibles have water leak issues coming in through the body seams in the 1/4 panels.

Are you telling me that hideous abomination known as the 350Z convertible was intentional?

yeah, I've driven a few convertible cars and couldn't tell much of a difference compare to normal cars.

If you roll down the window all the way down & open up your sunroof, frankly you will get a same thing.

Motorcycle will give you much different experience than cars, and for whatever reason if you don't want to get a motorcycle, here are some options.

just examples of convertibles that do not start life with the roof chopped off:

2000 Porsche Boxster S https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/5917718852.html

when the weather turns to crap put a hardtop on and you're good :

I forgot which one, maybe Honda or Mazda engineers said that chopping roof off is horrible idea since roof is the vital piece to make the rigidity of chassis.

Cars like S2000 and Miata have extra reinforcement around the shell to make it more rigid, but if the car originally had roof, it's not a good idea to chop it off.

Every modern car is unibody design; the body and frame both carry the structural loads so chopping the roof is essentially chopping the frame.

I had a co-worker who decided to make his own convertible in high school from a beater 80's car. The car basically failed immediately after he chopped the roof.
