OBD scanners

Was looking to get an obd scan tool for diagnosis and maybe go just leave in so I can monitor stuff on my phone. I won't be using it to diagnose any major mechanical issues. If anyone has recommendations would like to hear.

Basically there's the cheapos like this one, although I wouldn't mind spending more for a superior product.

BAFX Products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool for Android Devices

Mostly trying to decide between these two. i think the main difference is the app they use.

ScanTool 427201 OBDLink LX Bluetooth: Professional OBD-II Scan Tool for Android & Windows

BlueDriver Bluetooth Professional OBDII Scan Tool for iPhone, iPad & Android

For what car? I just picked this up (specifically for BMW)
iCarsoft Multi-system Scanner i910 for BMW/Mini_BMW/Mini Scan Tools
Reads things more than just CEL (including ABS, DSC, etc.) and also provides datastream showing live data as it happens. So for example I was able to check wheel speed in all 4 wheels and left/right steering angle.

IMO a completely wired solution would be your best bet since with bluetooth you're open to connectivity issues.

For BMW, general consensus is:

Veepeak $20.99 (bluetooth for android, wifi for apple)

https://www.amazon.ca/Veepeak-Blueto...ywords=veepeak

plus OBDfusion on google play store for $5.29
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ouchScan&hl=en

@The_AK - how much did the icarsoft cost you?

90 USD, I'm anticipating my next cars will be BMWs too so figured I may as well already cheaper than going to bmw dealership for "diagnosis"

Just got this one a couple weeks ago actually:
Veepeak $20.99 (bluetooth for android, wifi for apple)

Used it to look into a CEL.
I've used(connected) to it maybe 5 times just to try out different android apps I've downloaded (Torque Lite, Dash, etc.) and it's connected no problem.

So far I've only used the free apps and most of them limit the amount of data they provide. The data provided differs per vehicle as well depending on sensors present.

Important note, many of these plug in bluetooth/wifi dongle connectors do not turn off when the vehicle is off. Therefore, they may possibly drain your battery. Those that have physical switches on them, or do turn off automatically are usually more expensive.

I have the Veepeak and connected to a couple free apps without issue. I haven't yet found an app I like and don't mind spending a couple bucks. OBDfusion looks pretty solid, I'll be giving that a shot next.

Got a $12 no-name Bluetooth adapter from dx.com, paid for the full version of Torque Pro... works great.

I bought this on Amazon because I could change some personalized settings with it. Also the owner of the company is on the car forum I visited and everyone there is happy with their purchase. Support and update seems to be great so I decide to spend the extra for it. The crappy thing is there is a weekly or yearly subscription for it to unlock all the features in their own app but if you can find an old version of the app, you can still buy the lifetime subscription for about $34CAD tax in. I think you can use it with other apps too but I never tried it.
