Porsche 718...what the heck?

I don't know if this is an old news or not, but I just found out that Porsche decided to re-name Boxster and Cayman to 718.

They ditched their 6cyl and decided to go 4cyl 2.5L Turbo just like WRX.

Anyways, one surprising thing that I found out was that Cayman is CHEAPER than Boxster now.

what's going on?

http://www.porsche.com/canada/en/models/718/

This must be a bit confusing for customers since Cayman is known for step above Boxster.

Don't turn into Trump. At least get your facts right first. Going with 2.5L turbo 4 is only 1/2 the story.

year old news?

10% more horsepower
35% more low end torque
6L/100km Hwy, 10L/100km city fuel consumption

Seems like a decent trade off for a less sexy engine sound. (which is subjective anyway)

The "loyalists" are still in an uproar on how Porsche betrayed them, and how the engine note was absolutely instrumental to their Porsche / 987 / 981 experience. From looking at some of their -- for the lack of a better word -- whining, you'd think engine note is their #1 driving requirement with their Porsche.

I never really liked the older Boxsters. The new ones I would kill for.

Traditionally, the roadster is more expensive than the coupe equivalent for most car makers.

For Porsche, they're pricing their 911 cab more than the base 911 so it makes sense in their pricing structure. I'm sure from a manufacturing standpoint as well, the coupe is much cheaper and less complex to produce than the convertible.

yeah I know that, but wouldn't that mean Porsche has been ripping people off by overcharging Cayman but now for some reason they have decided to be generous? Which would seem a bit strange.

Nah I'd say the boxster has improved a lot for the 718 model thus the price increase.

If you think about it it has increased a lot.

Base price for Cayman 981 was 59k msrp and I think the Boxster was 56~

Now it is 61k for Cayman and 64k for the Boxster.

They are now also about the same in terms of performance where the boxster always got tuned down.

I think what the world needs is Boxster hard top just like Miata.
The weight gain is very minimal since hard top technology has improved with aluminum/carbon fiber roof and all that.

what is? Miata RF? https://www.mazda.ca/en/vehicles/2017-mx-5-rf/overview/

After tax and fees, it's well over $40,000 for Miata

No, Timpo, you are misinformed. You're so serious!

According to Trump, Porsche decided to bring back the 918 Spyder by renaming it as the 718.
Like Kellyanne Conway, he's using his position of authority to urge people to buy this product. #AlternativeFacts

Porsche has always been "ripping people off" by overcharging for all of their cars. They do it because they can, and they continue to do it because their clientele are willing to pay those premiums.

I also agree that the 718 are priced appropriately. In fact, when you compare them to the 981, I would actually call them a bargain. For the price of a new 718, you are basically getting the equivalent performance of a 981S, except that you lose the sonourous soundtrack of the boxer 6.

Yeah, JUST like the WRX. Just like it. No other way around it. Just. Like. WRX.

Porsche. Just like WRX. Porsche is totally spying on and stealing Subaru tech. I think we have a wiener here, give him the prize please.

When did the WRX go back to being 2.5L turbo? In fact, when did WRX have an H6? Serious question.

The absolute worst thing about Porsches are the owners.

edit: sorry, second worst. The worst thing is their basis on the Hitler-mobile.
