3rd brake light/JDM brake light mod legal or not?

I am wondering if I add a third brake light, or as they call it JDM brake light, or F1 brake light, is it legal? Will I get into trouble with police seeing it from the back?

Much appreciated!

The one at the bottom? I thought those were fog lights.

Doubt you'd get a ticket, cops probably wont even realize its aftermarket. These look great on the sti btw.

Had mine installed for more than half a year now. Its the F1 version that blinks. Had cops stopped behind me plenty of times with no issues. However, I do not believe they are DOT approved therefore they are technically illegal

I know sometimes they can be very picky that's why I asked... I'd be daily-ing it so any ticket avoided can go into my mod money :-P

Theres a new red STI that I see driving to work everyday, he has his 3rd brake light wired wrong and its completely lit up all the time. It's quite blinding and yet I've seen his car like this for over a year haha

I honestly hate it when people who have that light (be it aftermarket or factory) leave it on all the time. It's quite blinding. It's meant for poor visibility situations and I wish cops actually would ticket, or at least stop people who leave those on in good visibility conditions.

I remember driving to Kelowna following my friend. He had it on his Audi and I was following him cause he was leading the way to the house we were staying at. I had to get my passenger to call him up to tell him to turn it off. It was so much better when he turned it off.

^ there's a Mini around here with it on all the time, and both main brake lights are out. Makes it a bit hard to tell what's going on when they have a fog light on full, taillights that don't change, and only the few LEDs of the third light coming on when they brake.

Technically any added light needs to be SAE and DOT approved. If it's not, it's ticketable.

Berz out.

Furthermore to that, I believe the code also states that there be a maximum of 3 brake lights on the rear of the car. So, your standard 2 on the side and one in the middle.

Please dont be a part of the crowd that installs one of those and wires it to be on "brake" 24/7

i cringe every time

As for your question, half the cars on the road are "illegal", and cops have better stuff to do like pull over civics doing 80 farting out lawnmower sounds.

I found a lot of the newer cars (European like Audi, Benz) have super bright brake lights, I am usually blinded by their legal brake lights after stopping behind them at an intersection...

Yeah, but at least those turn off when brake is released. I see a lot of those where the driver leaves the rear fog light on and it's a constant blinding light. Half of them probably don't even know they have it on or know what it actually is.

I will make sure mine is not constant on if I ever decide to get one... I just really don't like the OEM plastic piece that blocked the JDM fog light slot...
