This is driving me crazy. Been experiencing some clunking noises when driving over bumpy roads on my front passenger side of the wheel for the last 3 or so months.

It is most prominent when the car hasn't been driven for a few hours (e.g. in the morning, or parked at school for the whole day), and the sound typically lessens as I drive (e.g. sound will basically be gone from East Van to Surrey).

Initially thought to be endlinks, and had that replaced (thanks see.lai) but the sound still persists. I am also on coilovers.

Anyone have an idea of what it might be?

Sound goes away when the car is warm.. that's weird. Have you checked the tophat and control arms/bushings?

Going to agree with snails (just cuz of the "once warm" comment)

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutt

is your suspension all torqued to spec? I've had the same noise when I put in my coilovers and just gunned them on with an impact. True out it was too tight, torqued to spec and noise went away.

So I went to a mechanic and had all the above checked out and said nothing looked wrong. He's assuming there's probably something wrong with the coilovers.

If that's the case (I'll probably have the stock put back on to see if the sound goes away first), does anyone know a place that can rebuild them? They only have like 15,000km and I literally just passed Tein's 1 year warranty by a week.

Which model of Tein is it? Depending on the model, it's likely that you're better off buying a new set (of something else).

It's the Street Basis. Even so...don't really want to buy a new set when I've only had them on for like 9 months

I was thinking of just having that one side repaired if it turns out to be the source of the problem. Would that be an issue?

Depending on how the rebuilding process works for tein, it maybe more cost effective to buy new set regardless of being 9 months old. Shipping to and from plus the cost to rebuild adds up quick.

I've ordered just the strut assembly (or cartridge as they called it) for BC Racing coilovers before. Here is the email they sent me when I inquired about parts

"A replacement BR Series cartridge is $95.00 plus shipping and a replacement lower mount is $50.00 plus shipping. An entire BR Series corner is $262.50 shipped within the lower 48 states."

You can re-use all your parts, lower mount, locking collars etc. Give tein an email directly. I would first rule out that the coilover is the issue by putting in stock suspension for a week

I don't know if this will help, but I'm having the exact same sounds from my KW v1s from both sides. Emailed KW and the RG guys listened too when moving my car onto the dyno. They both said it could be top mount/hat issues. Maybe look into that? I'm planning on ordering replacement parts and going from there.

Edit: Mine have 60k kms on the set and the sound has been there for the past 20k

Is the sound level consistent throughout the entire day that you drive? Or have you noticed that it lessens when the car is warm?

I'm not 100% sure of all the components my mechanic checked, so I'll be contacting him for more details.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was actually thinking of having the coilover repaired locally instead of having it done by Tein. If it had to be from Tein, then I also agree that it would be more efficient purchasing a new set.

Any reputable shops in the area if worst comes to worst?

Hey op. I also ordered front end links because apparently if they're bad, it makes the same sound. I'm just gonna put them i while i inspect the top hats

Do these coilovers have any adjustments? If so try changing things like dampening and preload to see if it has any effect, if it does then you know it's the damper. If not then before buying any replacement parts I'd swap the fronts back to stock to see if that corrects the problem.

The IS300 I bought came with Tein coilovers on it and they rattle over bumps a bit too.. I just got used to it...
