Shifting Car Into Neutral At Stops? D or N? This never occurred to me in my 8 years of driving. But my girlfriend from Korea recently mentioned to me it's odd that I don't shift into neutral at traffic lights. She said this was strange and I'm doing it wrong. If it matters the car is an automatic Toyota Yaris 07. |
They do this very often in Korea. Tell her this isn't Korea, and it's a stupid thing to do. While you're at it, tell her it's absolutely fine to sleep in a closed room with the fan on. Report back her reaction. Source: am Korean. |
does it have turbo? |
I see taxi drivers do it in HK all the time. I always assumed they do it to get the meter running in 'wait mode' as much as possible whenever they aren't moving. I can't imagine why you'd do this otherwise. |

I know they do it in Korea, China, Hong Kong. I asked one of the driver ( on call ) who drives an Alphard, and he said it reduces the friction so the automatic transmission can last longer. His Aplhard has 530,000 KM on original tranny. I do it because traffic lights can last up to 2 min in China. Rules are different from place to place, DON'T do this in Canada. Note: It's usually N then E-brake. |
I'll do it if I miss a light I know is a long one, waiting for a train, in a drive through etc, just so i'm not sitting there stalling against the torque converter for minutes on end... |
I thought the down side is the Tranny now has to move between n and drive more and there is also wear and tear with every time that it engages or disengages the gear |
If I do have to idle for a long time I just put it on neutral and turn the car off |

I've only used neutral in an automatic transmission equipped car for one purpose - and it sure as F wasn't my own car. https://cdn.meme.am/instances/33288524.jpg |
Life is too short to be shifting an appliance. Quote:
To this day they sell electric blankets and heated car seats. |
