Long story short, a camper van from Alberta reversed into our family car and drove away, but fortunately, we got the plate number and dash cam footage. ICBC specialist called us this morning and said that they only accept the video form in a USB and not uploaded on youtube or w.e. In addition, they said they wont be able to repair our damages since my dad does not have "collision" on his insurance even tho other party is 100% at fault and that it is up to the Alberta insurance company to determine if they want to cover the cost of repairs for us. To make matters worse, ICBC said after receiving our USB, there is a possibility that we may not get the USB back... Is ICBC just trying to dodge this claim or are they correct about everything they told us?

Does any one have any advice?

will be uploading video shortly.

I don't see why you wouldn't get the USB back unless they lost it
Why would Icbc get involved when you do not carry collision with them. It's between you and the other guys insurance

I never once had any issues with uploading my dashcam footage on YouTube. This is absurd.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the point of carrying basic insurance would be to protect you from cases like this. Isn't the purpose of collision to cover your vehicle if you are found at fault?

I didn't get my USB drive back. ICBC should be taking care of their client and going after the Alberta drivers' insurance.

For those who have seen my video, should I be pushing for 100% not at fault? Going from 50/50 to 25/75 is a better compromise as it doesn't hurt my premiums. Obviously I'd rather not pay 25% of my collision deductible if I shouldn't have to. Just not sure it's worth the trouble.

I should mention the driver couldn't speak English so her husband did all the talking. In response to my wife asking for papers he said "it's nothing" and started removing the evidence (wiping off paint transfer/buffing out scuffs). That's when my wife started taking photos.

I don't know what story he told ICBC but it seems unlikely he's being upfront with the facts, especially since he's challenging the change from 50/50 to 25/75. He has our personal information from the insurance exchange. A guy who doesn't want to own up to a mistake may not respond well to being found further at fault/paying more. I have a family, house, car, etc to consider. It's sad the system is open to this kind of possibility.

When I handed in my footage of the dump truck incident (full load of boulder sized rocks, dirt, and sand dumped on the freeway with me second car behind going at 100 kph - dump truck's tailgate not closed properly), they told me USB drive only. I knew I wouldn't get it back, so I put it on a really cheap USB drive. And sure enough, I never got it back.

Good thing I went to best buy and bought a $10 USB flash drive. You'd think that we're already paying more than enough with the hikes in our premiums but now they're taking our flash drives too when we are providing evidence to prove that we're not at fault. I really hope ICBC doesn't try to screw us over.. I mean what kinda car (besides the new prototype 3 wheel bicycles) are allowed on the road if they don't have third party liability?

Also I forgot to add that the camper van incident was a hit and run too. The guy offered $20 dollars and when my dad declined and asked for his insurance papers, he went into his car and drove off.

PS. Sorry for thread jacking

so weird. i've used my youtube potato cam vids and emailed or submitted links online and no one has had issues... maybe it's a new thing where they wanted the hard evidence in case someone deletes the video or do not want to download youtube videos for their records?

It's because they're so busy over there that youtube becomes a distraction........... you know, all those other suggested videos and such

No work gets done.

It would be awesome to see how much work some of those employees get done in a day.

Yes that is what collision is for so no need to correct you but he says he doesn't have collision..........Collision is not part of the basic insurance
The basic insurance is 3rd party liability which is for when you're at fault.

If you have Collision coverage then they will go after the Alberta driver's insurance cause then ICBC has to pay to fix your car, but if you don't have it, then it's none of their business.

I don't understand this part though,
Basic Autoplan

It's almost as though in your case, if you just said it was a hit and run and didn't know who did it then ICBC would cover you. Maybe someone who knows this better can fill us in.

Pulled from ICBC site, http://www.icbc.com/Documents/hit-run.pdf
• If you have ICBC collision coverage with a $1,000
deductible, or have no collision coverage, you pay
the first $750
toward the repair or replacement of
your vehicle or property

Ask why this does not apply to you.
