Phone Interviews I've never had one/experienced one before. Some friends say they ask behavioral situations to determine personality and fit to filter out candidates. Any tips/suggestions I should be aware of or prepare? I have one tomorrow morning. |

Here's an unorthodox tip for the phone interview: Dress yourself up, do up your hair, brush your teeth and be your best. They can't see you over the phone, but I swear your confidence goes up when you are dressed for the interview even over the phone. Some how the way you come off if you're talking just like you got out of bed gets communicated clearly and loudly through the phone. When I was younger, my ex told me that even if i'm preparing for a phone interview, I should make sure my breath is fresh and teeth brushed clean. Psychologically, it will make you smile more and be more positive. Don't ask me why, just fucking do it. It works. Every phone interview I've had, I still make sure I'm fresh and presentable, so even after the interview, I can go out and look good. Most of the time they'll definitely ask you some behavioral stuff on a general level to figure out how you work in certain situations, things you've already done in your career etc. Most of the time the interviewers are friendly so just have some friendly banter with them. |
I'm an HR professional - Without knowing the JD and position (entry, mid, senior), I wouldn't be able to give you precisely what you're looking but this might help. Have a common theme in your answers that relate to these key traits: Communication (written and verbal abilities with examples) Conflict Resolution (provide examples and use communication as the primary driver) Ability to adapt (previous experience) Multi-tasking (ability to manage multiple projects) Deadlines (ability to meet deadlines) Prepare for "tell me about a time when......." they usually revolve around conflict resolution, customer service skills, detail oriented tasks, organizational skills, deadlines. They know your technical skills based off reviewing your resume. They want to assess your soft skills here and further for the in person interview, if there is one. Prepare for behavioral questions as the technical ones will be easy to answer as they usually end up with Yes or No and an example. They will probably start with some easy questions to get you warmed up (at least the good interviewers will do this) - stay relaxed and if they ask you why you want the job, don't do as this one girl did and said it seems like an easy job lol - focus on your aspirations, your past skills as it relates to the position, what you can bring to the table that will propel you and the company forward. whatever questions you feel like. ask about the culture and work environment ask about why they decided to go external with the posting - is it a promote from within culture ask about the expectations of the position, what traits and qualities are they looking for the day to day tasks who your boss is - their management style I interview the shit out of the ppl who interview me, its my time to decide if i want to spend 8 hours of my day with them. |

3 key things for phone interviews 1) CHEAT sheet: have ALL the pre-written answer in POINT form with KEY words. Practice often and make sure when you answer questions, you go pack to the key words u have when you glace over. 2) STAND UP: like ZN6, when you STAND up during the interview (it helps to project your voice) and SMILE. People on the other end CAN tell the difference. 3) You better damn well know what you're answering; it's not different than any other interview. |
Have a copy of your resume on hand so that you can reference past experiences for the questions. I would think its mostly behavioural I.E Why do you want to work at our company? Why did you leave your last role? Whats your greatest strengths/weakness? |
i have conducted many phone interviews and also interviewed many times over the phone. usually its the 1st interview and the main purpose of phone interview is to narrow down group of candidates further; (1st being when resume was first read and selected for interview). usually 5-6 are selected for on site interview post phone. now it depends if its HR interview or direct with hiring manager (usually made clear at earlier time). if hiring manager is interviewing you. then expect to be asked direct question regarding your job, procedural question, thought process etc, and some HR questions but not detailed. HR will need to conduct interview also, in some companies HR talks to candidates first then hands them over to hiring manager. |
Just did the first in phone interview. It was merely trying to determine if my current skills are legit (asked me examples of what I do and exposure) and if they align with what they are looking for. Didn't ask me strengths/weakness questions. End of interview, they asked me to complete a PI (predictive index) assessment, haven't done it yet, plan to do it later when I get home. So far, I know they are reviewing with HR manager to see if I am good candidate for next phase of interview process. |

Got a response back just before 5pm. In for second round of interview with the Controller next week. :fuckyea: I honestly don't even know how my current skills align with their needs. I work at small/mid size company and they are global organization. I have zero exposure in comparison to the massive complexity of type of work they do. Do people just bullshit their way through and learn on the job? |
I feel like sometimes it's not about the skills but the attitude. Some people don't even research the company they apply for. If you prepared for the interview, and had reasonable responses to their questions, then it shows that you want the job more than the next guy. |
I know that I probably checked off half the boxes of "requirements" they were looking for when they asked specific questions on the phone interview. Some questions were straight "Yes/No" questions. I guess something I said impressed them; otherwise, makes no sense to call me in for second interview. |
All depends on your confident and how well you sounded. Still remember I was an hour late for my current job interview. I still got the job coz the manger said I sounded very confident during the interview that I didn't get the time mix up (in a nice way). Later I found out I was wrong but I called back and admitted I was wrong. Bonus points since I was able to accept I was wrong even though most people would just give up and look for another job. |
I really agree with the standing up part. makes you think and feel a lot better when handling the interview over the phone than sitting down or laying down. Try doing the superman pose for 1 min too and tell yourself that you can do it and you will impress the shit out of them. |
As I have interview Tuesday morning and it's a very corporate environment, I have no idea what to wear. It'll be hot day and I don't think wearing a suit is suitable for this weather lol. Plus I don't have any "safe" color shirts. All my shirts are bright, red, pink, purple. I'm thinking just wear black dress pants with a pink shirt and tie. I really don't think what I wear will affect whether they hire/not hire me as I mentioned above that, I don't even know how I got interview round 2, considering I felt I didn't meet half their requirements. I currently work a mid-size company and I wear shorts/jeans to work since I am quite senior and management is very laid back with the dress code. |

If you're driving to the interview, use AC to keep cool. There are other people interviewing for this job, do you want it more than them, or are you going to go into it half heartedly like you won't get the job already? |

what you can do is get there 10 minutes before u go in, say hi to reception and ask where the washroom is. If you take a peek and see everyone has a tie one, then take the time to go to the bathroom to don on a tie. Not a big deal. I've only seen 1 company who are still very old school corporate (IBM) where everyone still wear full blown suits. PS how do you not have 1 blue dress shirt. ahhahah |
