I personally don't eat these (damn celiac's disease) but my wife loves this place. any of you have a recommendation for where to go instead that's nearby?

subordinate 11-07-2017 12:33 PM

I use to love this place...the marinated vegs and banh mi was perfect/the best.

Then they changed something, and I always thought, "meh". Banh Mi Saigon is better.

But I'll go back to tung hing this week for memory lane sake

Ba Le, beside Sal y Limon is a solid choice. Or Banh Mi Saigon on 40th and Victoria.

Has anyone been to the place beside Tung Hing? (I forget the name, but it's in the same complex.) Word on the street is they're comparable, but Tung Hing has the upper hand for consistency.

Liquid_o2 11-07-2017 12:53 PM

Bahn Mi Saigon is my fav now.

whitev70r 11-07-2017 04:30 PM

Bahn Mi Saigon (more like 38th and Vic) doesn't toast their bread ... which I find a tad strange, I prefer the warm toasted style.

Bonka 11-07-2017 05:45 PM

^ ^ ^

Saigon is more of a dense, loaf style whereas Tung Hing is more towards the traditional crusty baguette.

Wonder if the owner owns the entire lot. Either going to be some hipster joint or housing. I didn't ask further but I wonder how much rent increase did the landlord want.

It's comparable but yes not consistent. And last 3 times I went there I tried to get a meatball sub and was told they were out. I asked if I needed to come earlier or later in the day and I couldn't get an answer.

Kim Chau a block east seems alright.

I really miss the place at Fraser and 17th. I know it was a long time ago but $2, stuff with meat and veg, I ate one and was full instead of the $5 ones today which I need to eat 3 of

Buu Dien? It's been closed for probably 15 years

corollagtSr5 11-15-2017 08:10 PM

The one on Fraser and 17 in that old plaza was my first ever Vietnamese sandwich lol back in 1995.

Vansterdam 11-15-2017 08:47 PM

Buu Dien had the best meatball sandwich IMO

the guurl working there was pretty cute too ;) :fullofwin:

Sounds like you're referring to Banh Mi Yen Linh on Kingsway and Saint Catherines, apparently it's open now

10% from Nov 17th-Dec 3rd

Verdasco 11-19-2017 12:48 AM

The meatball sub had actual meatballs in it. Meatball now everywhere is just spread on like peanut butter

On the south side where the florist used to be, then Room for Cream.

More fillings than Bale. That's my spot for now. And coincidentally Bale is having a 30th anniversary sale, 10% off............

shawnly1000 03-30-2018 02:32 PM

Looks like they're re-opening again as "Bean Banh Mi"

Tried it today. Every sub is $5+ but there's 10% off for I don't know how long. The siu mai one actually has meatballs like Bu Dien used to. They're small meatballs but he loaded them up and then added a couple scoops of the sauce.

I've been twice; the last time I went they bumped it to 20%.

+1 My new fav place
I found the last couple years Tung Hing quality went down. They skimped out on the filling. Saigon stacks it and I actually prefer their bread.. as it doesnt cut my mouth while I try to eat it lol
