| Need advice
Hey guys and gals,
i hope everyone of you had an awesome weekend.
As I'm kinda new in this city/country I'm currently in a dilemma.
My Roommate/Landlord gave me the 30 days notice as he apparently needs the room i live in to look for a new place and move out at the end of December.
As I'm pretty inexperienced in looking for flats/rooms i just went on craigslist and took a look but all ads seem to be outdated.
Does anyone knows when its the best time to look for rooms in Vancouver Downtown?
As i currently live in Downtown i would love to continue living here but i dont wanna pay more than 1000$ for a room/Den.
I'm grateful for any help, thanks .

IIRC, your landlord is required to pay you 1 months rent if they're giving you notice like this.
As for looking for craigslist not too sure. I know that MLS will have listings as well.

padmapper
but it uses mostly CL and some kijiji
year-end and back to school rush in August is terrible for finding rentals
with your budget you need to look outside of downtown
welcome to the reality of Vancouver

welcome to the reality of Vancouver | Well we agreed to a month to month living here, but i thought everything was fine, i always clean up after myself and i'm a clean person in general, im not really loud and I'm always nice. And then on Friday he just texted me and said it's not working out.
Well to be honest i currently live in the middle of Downtown and pay less than a thousand bucks a month. And i have my own room not like a shared one.
And i don't mind paying some bucks more than 1000, but less is better right? haha
Thanks for the quick answers.

Doesn't matter if it's month to month. They are required to give you 1 months rent if they are kicking you for their own use. https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/h...o-month-notice Quote:
Compensation
When a landlord ends a tenancy for landlord’s use of property or to do major construction, the landlord must give the tenant the equivalent of one month’s rent on or before the effective date of the landlord's notice. This is true even if the tenant pays rent for the last month.

a thousand buck is a steal. no wonder the landlord wants to kick you out. GREEEEEDDDDY
As a comparison, wife has a couple of places downtown that her family owns. On average her 2 bedroom apartments are going for $3500 a month right now. the one on 199 drake is $3800 for a 2 bedroom.

I think its a basic one bedroom apartment with some walls build up and a door instead of the living room area.

If you want to stay in your current living situation, it's probably a good idea to look into filing a dispute with the RTA.

Regardless of the rental agreement you are entitled to one months rent from the owner. So ask him for the one months rent.
It's the least he can do.

#2, The landlord is required to give notice IN WRITING. If not in writing, then it's not considered that he served you notice.
#3, If you stay the full 2 month period, the last month is free. If you move out prior to the two month period (Say you move out in month 1) the landlord refunds you for the number of remaining days in month 1 plus the landlord pays you for all of the second month.

Know your rights, get what you're entitled. It's a tough rental market, don't accept shitty landlording from people like meme405 who don't read actually read/understand the RTA (see Real Estate Thread)

Everyone else is giving you irrelevant information. You have no rights under the RTA if you are sharing a kitchen and other rooms in the apartment with your landlord.
The only rights you have are related to a written agreement you signed with your landlord. You can pursue those in small claims court if he fails to uphold his part of the agreement.

did OP sign any lease papers though?
sounds like subletting
best time to look at craigslist is last week of the month, this is when people give their move out notice and owners post new Ads

A 1 bedroom apartment in my friends building on 3rd and Maple (Kitsilano) was rented out for $1200(2 months ago maybe?clean older unit) That’s your own place! I had luck walking the neighbourhood (kits) and just calling the numbers on the lawn which have vacancy. My landlord doesn’t post on Craigslist due to the overwhelming response. Worth a try.

Search for bachelors in Vancouver. I see lots in and around $1000. Pending how nice you need it. But from the sounds of the Australian bunk house (that’s a guess ha) I doubt your that picky.

how are you not a tenant if you're paying rent? unless you're homestay I don't see why roomshares are not covered.

Depends on the tenancy agreement he has with his landlord.
If it's Roommate/Occupant then no RTA protection.
If it's Co-Tenant or Tenant-In-Common than RTA rules apply.
Re-reading OP's post, if he's sharing living space with the landlord, it's most likely the former.
