computer issue * help plz

So i got a HP OMEN pre build from bestbuy a year ago, lately after windows update my screen started to flicker (goes black for one second) when i fast forward the video such as youtube and movies, everything else is fine.

initially i thought it was the monitor so i went and switched it up, changed the hdmi cable and problem still exist. (monitor is a HP 7ms response time..i doubt this is the issue as i dont game)
After i re format the computer, i turned off the window update and problem seems to occur much less. before was every time when i fast forward, now its occasionally, i tried everything youtube suggested..such as turn off error/report turned off in msconfig, i dont have norton or itune installed...updated the video driver and still no luck.

Could it be my video card?
its a invidia GTX960

I dont wonna go out and buy a video card and turns out that is not the issue. I heard bestbuy recently changed the policy that once u open it you cant return?

Gut feeling is driver related. Did you go to Nvidia's website and download the latest driver for your card? Don't do it via Windows built in driver tool.

If that doesn't fix it, some motherboards have a build in HDMI port. In other words, if your computer has another port, try that. It would bypass your video card completely.

The only other thing I can think of is to disconnect power, open up the case and nudge your card gently into your motherboard to make sure it's seated correctly.

yup i went invidia downlaoded the latest 960 driver and still...the same

i will try a different HDMI port and open up my computer today

ugh ...i hate computer issue......gets hella annoying

twitchyzero 12-07-2017 09:21 AM

does it have integrated graphics you can try plugging into?

oh and don't buy HP next time

GG 12-07-2017 09:23 AM

i dont think so

HP are bad??

:okay::okay::okay:

twitchyzero 12-07-2017 09:27 AM

look by the USB ports in the back to see if there's a video connection (DVI, HDMI, DP etc.) that's not on the video card

if you haven't made any changes to your computer recently and the problem started out of the blue, it's likey your video card..then again you don't play games so it's hard for the discrete graphics to fail in sucha short time

ya its super awkward, i use my computer very moderately.

Youtube, browse, netflix and thats about it.
computer goes to sleep in 30 minutes, screen turned off in 15 minutes.

How on earth would it die in 12 months is beyond me.

I had HP computers before x 2 and they both lasted me since 2008 without any issues.

lowda9 12-07-2017 10:30 AM

Have you tried to rollback the driver?

GG 12-07-2017 10:35 AM

yup

still GG

reformated, used old software...no updates, old driver

it got better, but not perfect.

When it was bad after window update, it would flash every single time i fast forward

now its happens like 2/10 times

super weird

RickyTan3 12-07-2017 10:44 AM

Update Flash, Java, C++ and Silverlight?

Might solve it

Razor Ramon HG 12-07-2017 10:50 AM

If you don't game, just take the video card out and use integrated graphics.

Problem solved.

underscore 12-07-2017 11:02 AM

If it's that new, is it still under warranty?

GG 12-07-2017 11:14 AM

unforunately warranty expires on Sept 22

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu :moderatorban:

Use another display cable and port like DP or VGA to rule out the HDMI cable/ports

GG 12-08-2017 07:40 AM

so i borrowed a friends video card and it seems to do the trick
no flickering after testing it for few hours....will continue to monitor it until its fully clear.

Its a Asus Radeon RX-480 8gb

wat do u guys think about this card?

should i grab it?

underscore 12-08-2017 09:19 AM

It's complete overkill if you don't game, just get a GT210 or something cheap.

GG 12-08-2017 10:12 AM

lol alright
:okay::okay::)

i do plan to get a 4k monitor....apparently rumor has it that a lot of fonts gets fucked up? since window 10 doesnt support it 100% especially when it comes to apps and shit

Manic! 12-08-2017 10:25 AM

How much can you get the 480 for? You can use it to mine crypto when your not using the computer.

GG 12-08-2017 10:39 AM

thats what i was thinking , use it for mining

$300 ish

underscore 12-08-2017 12:31 PM

If you're going 4k, IMO you want at least a 32" screen. I was given a 27" at work and I can't see a damn thing so I run it at 1440 which is stupid but whatever. I'm currently driving that with an old HD 5570, so I imagine anything made in the last ~5 years can push 4k.

I paid $340 plus shipping and taxes for my 8 gig 580's. Running 24/7 you will make around $60 a month after power costs depending on the current price of the coin.

GG 12-08-2017 03:37 PM

wow how come so cheap

where did u get it?
I checked memory express

$420 + taxes = $480
