security camera recommendations

I am in need of a decent security system for night as well as day with sound if possible. 2 channel or 4 channel.

Had a few incidents lately where I ended up chasing the individual and getting his license plate number but didn't see his face.

Pretty much anything you can get these days is at least "decent". Lots of guys are going to recommend cloud-based cameras like Nest and such shit, with no consideration of actual system design, areas covered, lighting, distance, field of view, and of course, budget.

Good, cost-effective recommendations require a lot more detail to the question.

Costco usually has some combo deals on sale. Might be worth looking up.

This has been discussed a bit in the renovation threads

I've bought the Lorex 4 camera system from Costco for my place, you have to install it yourself obviously and you have to run all the wires from the brain/power source/hard wired ethernet connection to the cameras

i'm pretty happy with it for the price, the 4 camera system is just under $400, it has free cloud based backups and also can record up to a month at a time in constant recording mode. The night vision is pretty good but you're probaly not going to see a plate number unless the area in question is well lit and close enough to the camera.

I think as Soundy said, location, lighting, and the correct placement is super important when installing the cameras, the one camera i have mounted in my side yard looking down to the back is focused too much on the side of the house, so when the night vision turns on it focues only on the stucco and i cant see anything else. Needless to say will have to get the ladder out and climb way back up and adjust accordingly.

In your situation cameras are probably good, but in terms of overall security, i feel like cameras are about as useful as puting a sticker on your front door. Odds are if anything happens or your home is broken into, its going to be done regardless, the cameras are just a deterant at best, it adds virtually nothing to overall safety lol

does anyone know where i can get those 'hidden cameras' that you always see used on sites like xhamster and pornhub to record unaware people when they're changing clothes or using the bathroom?

i think that kind of camera would be perfect to film my dog without him knowing. I just wanna know what he gets upto when im not there

If you have a crappy iPhone lying around just download a baby monitoring app($5) and run the camera on the iPhone.. I do this with our cat when we go to our cabin at the coast. You can also use the speaker and freak the shit out of them..

yeah but my dog knows what an iphone looks like. I don't want him to haev any idea -- i want it to be inconspicuous enough to confuse even the average 19-24 year old human female.

I pieced together something using a couple of cheap Chinese IP Cameras (DaHua IPC-HDW4431C). They're relatively cheap (about $50USD each), waterproof, and support PoE so it's a fairly easy install.

To record, I use a software application called Blue Iris that I run on my NAS PC.

Seems to work pretty well. I have one facing my front yard and one in the back lane since I live near a Skytrain and there's plenty of transients who have no problem taking a shit on my driveway.

The cameras I got do have mics and Blue Iris does support audio capture as well, but I've got my camera mounted up pretty high so I don't know how effective it would be.
