Trying to reconnect with a Taiwanese family that lived in Vancouver Hi! Sorry--I'm new to these forums and someone from Reddit suggested that I post here to spread the word. I hope this is the right place to post this, but if not I'll gladly take this down or move it to the appropriate section... My mother and I (who are from California) are trying to reconnect with the family of one of her adult school friends, Leslie, who moved to Vancouver about 20 years ago. About 2-5 years ago, we were informed by Leslie's husband (Henry?/Harry?) that Leslie had passed away due to breast cancer. My mother was torn, and she was so heartbroken that she became quite depressed for a few weeks. When she finally decided to call Henry back to find out more, she found that nobody would answer her calls or call her back. Ever since then, we haven't heard from Leslie's family at all. Recently my mother and I were talking and she realised that she never got closure as to how Leslie's family was doing--which is why I'm posting here. We would love to get back in touch with them, but it's been very difficult tracking them down. Here is what I know about them: - Both of our families are Taiwanese. - My mother and Leslie went to adult school together about 20 years ago in Southern California. From what I know Leslie moved her family to Vancouver shortly afterwards because she couldn't get a US citizenship. - The family's last name is 紀. My mother doesn't know what the English romanisation of this is: it could be Gee, Ge, Ji, Chi... it all depends on how they decided to spell it. I've checked Facebook but I couldn't find anyone who fits that description. - Leslie has two children, a son named Kevin should be about 21 years old, and a daughter named Joanna who should be around 18 years old. - Leslie and her entire family visited us around 2006-2007 in Southern California. Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures together and my memory of that event is a bit hazy. - I don't know if the family moved back to Taiwan after Leslie's death, but it might be a possibility. - I have a very old photo of Leslie and her family here - I am currently in the process of finding a phone number that I can connect them to, but so far I haven't had much luck. - Here is the reddit version of this thread: LINK Does this fit the description of anyone you might know? Please let me know if you might have any additional questions and I'll be sure to pass them along to my mother! Thank you in advance for your help! |
good luck on your search, have you tried checking through FB? |
yup! I've tried searching for both Kevin and Joanna and looked through tons of FB accounts but unfortunately none of them match my description :( |
try calling bc cancer agency. I'm not sure if they'll release information to you but if you explain your story, they may look into a file on whether they had a patient named Leslie (or another legal name?) and point you to the right location for contact. If she had breast cancer, she was probably at the bc cancer agency. That or look up the obituary of Leslie from one of the funeral homes here. Good luck! |

Best of luck on your search but sorry I can't add any value |

Maybe someone can do a reverse look up on Henry/Harry's and see if they can find something? |
I can try to ask around about their kids. Usually people tend to know everyone if you grew up in Vancouver. My sister is around his age, wont guarantee anything though. |

I would bet the Taiwanese spelling of her last name would be "Chi" hope that helps narrow down your search |
There are so many variables. Leslie might not even be her legal name. Did she actually take on her husbands surname? What's her full chinese name? Good luck. |
there used to be a segment on an extremely popular Taiwanese game-show that reconnected former relationships...mentors, close friends, etc...but it was in the 90s and predating Facebook your post just gave me a massive hit of nostalgia...I wish your family all the best in the search for closure try contacting our local taipei economic and cultural office (Taiwan's unofficial embassy), I suppose even if they have face-tracking capabilities they wouldn't release sensitive information, but could be a last resort? but yes, it's more likely Leslie still carried her maiden name, not the family surname |
Dang... I knew of a Joanna Chi from work and got excited for a sec, but she's like in her 40s. Not the right person, lol. But I was really hoping I could have helped in some way. Oh well, good luck. Hope it works out in the end. |
