A friend of mine in hawaii for vacation right now just woke up to the same message. I'm more willing to bet this was a hoax/prank done by a hacker in the U.S or maybe someone who was working for Apple

punkwax 01-13-2018 09:44 AM

Hawaii’s area code is 808.. coincidence?

twitchyzero 01-13-2018 09:46 AM

do they even have bomb shelters?
you can be sure FEMA would sound the sirens if it was a real warning

hud 91gt 01-13-2018 09:48 AM

I just left Maui 12 hours ago. Bejesus.

No bomb shelters and what sirens?

Putting aside whether that was a hack or not, I’m very impressed and never thought of the ability for these smart phones to become early warning devices. In the event of a real threat that could help save a lot of lives

They have sirens that sound in case of incoming attacks. There used to be one in North Van right beside the Coach House from the old War days. Might still be there haven't been there in quite some time.

^ I figured there was one kicking around in Vancouver...have they ever used it in drills? I mean you probably have to ask your grandma that

For the first time since the end of the Cold War, Hawaii will test nuclear sirens - CNN

Berzerker 01-13-2018 10:36 AM

I remember them testing it when I was younger. In the 80's. I just checked google street view and it's gone now. It was loud as FUUUUUUUCK though. Was a throwback to WW2 and the cold war where they were actually scared of incoming air attacks. This is why there are the gun mounts in Stanley Park you can still visit.

either i was dreaming or there was an air raid type siren last week coming from either north shore ship yards or the port in East van. I sleep with ear plugs sometimes and pulled them out around 3am to hear the siren, it was faint but was still like wtf...

Manic! 01-13-2018 11:07 AM

Governor of Hawaii claims during a shift change someone pushed the wrong button. You would think they would have pust more than just a button to sent out an alert.

That vancouver siren.. I would've woken up shitting my pants to that horrific sound

bcuzracecarz 01-13-2018 12:52 PM

Yea I'm in Kona on the big island for my honeymoon, the loudest most obnoxious alarm came on my phone, and the text msg, it was pretty frightening, then everyone started coming out of their rooms and figuring out what to do. Hawaii has no bomb shelters so fireman and cops were just saying go inside and shut the doors and windows. Took 15 minutes before we started to figure out via twitter that it was a false alarm. 38 minutes before we received another msg saying it was a false alarm. Pretty terrifying when everyone is panicking around you, and there is nothing you can do #murica

Lol this reminded me of the guy a couple doors down from LA, (when we were figuring out if it went to all numbers on the island or only randoms), "if it does hit it will be in Honolulu, won't hit here" to which I stated, "Really don't think that's going to save us in this situation"..... My wife then hit me

Have you guys seen the movie War Games?

When the WOPR system goes nuts. Almost seems like it.
Except we didn't go DEFCON 1.

Nuts to think about.

Not much you can do about the blast - if you're in range you're dead anyway. It's the radiation you want to shelter yourself from if you survive the blast.
